Spoofing a landline / 1471

I recently received a call from someone claiming to be from Santander's Fraud Team, I knew for a fact that they were scammers, they rang my landline, I checked the number using 1471 and the number was a Santander number. I then chose option 3 to call back and was transferred to the real Santander... Is it possible for 1471 call back to ring the 'legitimate' number even though the original call was from a scammer

Re: Spoofing a landline / 1471

Yes it’s quite common for scammers to disguise the identity of the line they are calling from, however I’m not sure it’s that common for them to spoof a genuine number of the company they are claiming to be representing, after all , if like you, you call back the number displayed you would get the genuine company and that doesn’t help the scammer.

It would appear that whoever called you must have targeted  you, rather than a blanket , mass call , generic scam , like claiming to be from Microsoft and saying your computer is infected, after all if it were random , the chances of someone actually being a customer of Santander ( the spoofed  number ) are slim, so if you are a Santander customer, and received a call where the scammer went to the trouble of spoofing a genuine Santander number, suggests it wasn’t some random event, but targeted against you.

Out of curiosity, how did you know for a fact it was a scam ?

Sounds likely was Santander.

AFAIK spoof numbers are fairly random and are obviously random which is why they should be blocked better.

If you're a Santander cutomer you should phone them.

There's a new scam 'hotline' 159 https://www.independent.co.uk/news/business/news/scams-hotline-159-bank-fraud-b1928102.html I think that has its own problems.

People just need to be super careful and NEVER speak to anyone about banking or anything to do with sales or money.

You can just call your bank the following day (best to leave it as there's a potential problem if the caller doesn't hangup which is supposed to be stopped soon apparently).

As my gran used to say "If it's important they'll come to your door".

She was arrested quite a bit.

Re: Spoofing a landline / 1471

Hi

Thanks for the info that's really interesting!

Basically we had been scammed earlier that day and lost money out of our account. The same person who scammed us called on the landline afterwards I answered the call and spoke with him afterwards I did 1471 and 3 to call back and got directed through to the genuine Santander call centre. Santander are not claiming any liability and have also dismissed our complaints. We are still battling to get our money back.
