Advice please on a recent ADSL upgrade to Fibre 1 and DV

Hi guys. Well after several years and me declining request to upgrade (finally being sort of threatened by BT) the event happened on Monday12th Oct. All is fine but I had initially put a power supply near or below my hall table which gets the hot sun from midday onwards. Clearly I cannot leave it in this position for next Spring/Summer etc. and so I am extending the Ethernet cable plugged into the SH2's  WAN port and taking that further back down the hall into the shade.

I would like to know, if it is OK to turn off the  SH2 pull out their white Ethernet cable and put an extender adapter on it and a 3 to 5 metre Ethernet patch lead then move the SH2 to a more suitable position plug back in the cable into the WAN port and power on again. Will this go smoothly and not upset my current connection? obviously the ONT will show the temporary disconnection etc but the three lights should all go green again after a few minutes or so. I currently have a phone plugged into the SH2 but the main DECT house phone/Answer machine is operating via a paired DV adapter with the phone back where it always has been in my lounge.

Any guidance or precautions would be invaluable here to a newbie re fibre/DV.

In Bromley, South London the Kelly group did the work which was sort of OK except one of my outside bricks was blown a bit as he drilled from inside to get the Fibre cable inside to the ONT.  Strangely they left the old copper cable strung across the road and said it is because we are listed as vulnerable but will come back in 28 days when the new system has settled down and is up and running which it was in a matter of minutes. My hall phone which is an old landline one still had a display and dial tone but it could not make or receive calls!

“I would like to know, if it is OK to turn off the SH2 pull out their white Ethernet cable and put an extender adapter on it…”

I’m not sure what you mean by an extender adapter.  Just replace the existing cat 5e ethernet cable between the ONT and the SH2 with a longer one.  Theoretically, it can be up to 100m long.  That’s under ideal test conditions, so working techs don’t usually go much beyond 80m, but I suspect you’ll find that plenty long enough for you.

The ONT should restart fine. I reboot mine every two months.  Never had any problems.

The only thing I would caution against is don’t remove the green fibre optic plug.  Those interfaces are very dust and scratch sensitive.  Without the correct cleaning kit to hand you should not disconnect it.

EDIT:  You can buy suitable cables on Amazon etc.  It's just standard cat 5e.  The only other thing I would add is avoid anything labelled CCA (Copper Clad Aluminium).  It's rubbish.  You want pure copper.

By extender I just meant an adapter to connect a length of ethernet cable to another length.  Don't want to tamper with existing lead plugged into the ONT.

It would be less likely to cause a problem if you just replace the whole lead.

Never introduce more connections than necessary, it just adds an extra fault liability. Simply replace the lead with a longer one. There is absolutely no problem with doing so.

If you insist on doing it as an extension, have a look on Amazon for cat 5e female/female couplers.  I doubt you'll get an extension lead for cat 5e.  I've never seen one.

(I thought I'd put this on the right thread to avoid confusion).

It is cat 6 cable according to the photo and my examination of said cable.Ethernet cable.jpg

Re: Advice please on a recent ADSL upgrade to Fibre 1 and DV

You want a cat 6 cable and coupler then.  You can connect cat 6 with cat 5e, however, as the RJ45 plugs are the same.

The difference is that the cat 6 wire is slightly thicker, hence the internal bore of the plugs is a bit bigger, but externally they are identical.  Cat 5e will do 1Gb/s but has its accelerator on the floor.  (It was "enhanced" to get the old cat 5 up to 1Gb/s).  Cat 6 will do 1Gb/s easily and unofficially can do 10Gb/s at up to 55m.

The two are essentially the same, though, and will work together.  Of course, any link is only as fast as its slowest bit.
