I recently bought a new handset for my BT8600. I have registered it to the base and the answer machine is set to Answer and Record but no messages are being recorded - help please!

Have you tried removing the power to the base unit for about a minute, as that often fixes the problem?

I'm struggling to understand the sequence of events.

What exactly did you have to start with?

What exactly have you added?

Did the answering work previously?

Do you have BT's voicemail service enabled?

@Rhubarb4

As @rbz5416  has suggested, it may be that BT Voicemail is answering the call first. This seems to be a problem with people who have recently moved to BT Digital Voice, and the 1571 service answers the call before the answerphone can cut in.

Perhaps you can confirm whether that is the case?

Re: BT8600

We had BT8600, 2 phones, one upstairs and one down with the answerphone. The downstairs hand set gave up so I bought a new one and set it up and registered it to the base. Our provider is Plusnet not BT and the answer phone worked previously but I can't tell you exactly when it stopped working as we don't get a lot of messages. When you phone our number the answer phone kicks in and instructs you to leave a message but nothing appears to be recorded.

Plusnet also has voicemail. Dial 1571 & see what you get. Maybe the messages were recorded there. If you have voicemail messages the dial tone will probably be two-tone instead of the usual monotone.

@Rhubarb4  have you asked on the Plusnet Forum, as this is the BT Retail forum?

Yes that is what has happened.  When I got the new handset I reset the answer delay to 10 rings as I am 75 and not so nimble as I was!  I have put it back and now the answer phone is recording.  Thank you for your help.
