Outgoing speech inaudible without using headphones on BT4000 Big Button

We acquired  BT4000 Big Button handsets a while ago which were used by my mother-in-law, who had poor hearing and I think may have used them with a hearing aid in some way. When I make landline calls the recipient can hear me just fine but I can hardly hear them at all. I've upped the volume and tried the amplify button. The only thing that works is to plug in some earphones. I've found nothing in the user guide and there is no mention of using the headphone jack point.

How can I get a normal volume for incoming speech without having to reach for headphones every time I make or receive a call? Might it help just to carry out a reset?

Hi @Zenic, welcome to the forum, and thanks for your post. 

I'm sorry that you're having to use the headphones to be able to use the phone fully. Have a look at the BT4000 Help Page and it may be best to reset the phone if you don't have too much information to input again.

If its the BT4600 you are referring to, then this is a known fault with these phones, and there is no fix for it. If you press the green button again, it will enable the speaker and handsfree, and you will be able to hear the person calling, as the speaker is separate from the earpiece.

Hi Keith - thank you. It's a BT400 Twin. I'll try what you suggest and see if that helps.
