I get your points, all totally valid. Some of my devices are WPA3 capable and those that are, are set to WPA3 Personal. Again, I hear the point from other contributors about if anyone wanted to hack into your WiFi, they'd have to be within 50 metres etc, but it is what it is.
As for DNS servers, again, a personal choice. I use Quad9 DNS because I have researched it and made my own decision. Enhanced privacy and security was the lure for me, but hey, if folks are happy with what the ISP pushes out, then great, all is well in the ISP/Customer relationship. It's just interesting reading the threads on DNS issues on this forum, but, as you often point out, it probably only affects a tiny minority of customers.
I suppose at the end of the day ISPs are trying to grab your business and attacking you from as many fronts as possible to win you over. For the tech savvy it may be the WiFi 6 and the benefits a particular router may bring that may lure you in. For a pound or two more perhaps. Or for others simply a cheaper deal with a quite capable and absolutely fine for the purpose router. Or perhaps others tempted by faster speeds. That’s the beauty of choice I suppose. But I feel that people thinking of changing should have a good read of this forum. There’s an awful lot of good sense spoken on here. From us elderly 😁as well as I’m sure the young ones. If you are up for a change make it an informed choice.
I couldn't agree more with your conclusions.
For me, I'm privacy focussed. It's really nothing to do with my ISP what DNS servers I utilise for instance or the VPN I use.
I actually really enjoy using forums such as this because you do get to learn a lot. Some great advice, some not. There's still so much I don't know 👍
Fascinating reading. As BT have shelved their plans to migrate their Broadband customers, is it an option to upgrade the outdated Smart Hub 2, with the new EE router, without changing supplier.
I do believe your question has been answered numerous times over several threads, yes, apparently the EE WiFi6 router is entirely compatible whilst retaining BT as your ISP, you just have to buy said router from somewhere like eBay.
I'm not sure it has, as weren’t the goal posts moved in March 2025, when BT decided to retain their Broadband customers. It’s not clear what developments have been made behind the scenes, but it is obvious that as their own Smart Hub 2 technology is 7 years old, it clearly predates Full Fibre. Personally, it is not clear if the EE WiFi6 router would have to be rebranded, but in any case, shouldn’t existing customers be entitled to a free upgrade.
With much respect, I think you’ve misunderstood my response to your previous post. There are contributors on this forum that apparently successfully use EE routers with BT still as their ISP, you just put in the BT username and password much like any third party router.
If you have a specific complaint related to whether or not BT should be upgrading their equipment, then you should direct that to BT. This forum isn’t the medium for that. If you’re so unhappy with your current router, change it to one which meets your needs which is exactly what I did.
@Quesada In message 5 you’d changed from a FF900 with Halo 3 to FF150 with no difference in service.. Which seemed a great advert for thinking things through and only paying for what you needed speedwise. Are you now not happy with the SH2 then?
Has anyone moved from BT to the EE package. Customer services said its a no hassle move? And technically it's still BT but different router, a better one.
I got moved over (without my agreement) but didn't get a new router which is what happens for most of those switching I think.
