BT broadband upgrade from ADSL to Fibre (along with Digital voice)

Hi,

I've recently been notified that I'm being upgraded from my current ADSL broadband to Full Fibre as well a getting Digital Voice. Engineer is due to come next month to install it.

When I track the order in my BT account, it states that the Fibre package is Fibre 1, however when I checked the broadband deals available Fibre 1 doesn't appear to be available and was wondering if anyone might know which broadband package I'm likely to be getting and likely speed when I'm upgraded to Full Fibre?

I'm assuming that I'm likely to be getting the basic Fibre package?

My router is currently downstairs and I'm likely to keep the new router in the same place when they're installing it. I've also got a landline phone upstairs and was wondering if the engineer may need to install anything there, although I'm aware I'll need to get the phone adaptor if I want to continue using existing phone with Digital Voice.

Any advice/comments you can give is greatly appreciated.

First and foremost, broadband packages are entirely independent of medium of delivery. Prices for a given package are the same whether delivered by copper or fibre.

If you intend the router to remain where it is, you can simply disconnect the incoming copper pair when the fibre is provided and then just connect the green socket at the rear of the hub to the master socket with a double ended BT431-BT431 cable and your extensions will work as before.

Re: BT broadband upgrade from ADSL to Fibre (along with Digital voice)

I’m not an expert in this area but as no one else has answered this…

As far as I’m aware Fibre 1 is up to 55 Mb/s and is the same cost/speed regardless of whether it is delivered over copper or fibre.

Full fibre requires the installation of an ONT (Optical Network Terminal).  The router connects to this instead of the phone socket.  This is a small box on the wall about the same size as a master socket.  If you want it in a different location, you will have to ask the installer.  Within reason, they will put it where you like.  It doesn’t need to be in the same position as the old master socket, but it does need power and so must be within about 1.5m of a power point/extension lead etc.

With Digital Voice (DV) the phone will now plugs into a socket on the back of the router.  If this is not a convenient location, you can get an adapter that is basically a plug-in phone socket.  The phone then plugs into that and it uses DECT (the same technology as cordless phones) to talk to the router.

Hope that helps.

Re: BT broadband upgrade from ADSL to Fibre (along with Digital voice)

If you are migrating to DV and are also getting a migration to FTTP at the same time , the speed profile is whatever you currently have , so if you have F1 (upto 55Mb )then that continues when you are on FTTP , the only difference is if you don’t currently get the maximum 55Mb from FTTC because if the distance you are from the cabinet , you see an increase to 55Mb because there is no rate reduction because of distance, if you get the full 55Mb anyway , there won’t be any noticeable difference.
Checking deals with BT only shows a selection of products not the entire range , plus if already on F1 there isn’t much point showing you F1 if that’s what you are already on

Hi liquorice,

Thank you for your comments. Your solution for the upstairs telephone sounds ideal. If I use a double ended BT431- BT431 cable to connect the hub to the master socket, I am assuming that I wouldn't need to use a digital voice adaptor as there is an extension phone line running from the master socket to the upstairs phone?

Re: BT broadband upgrade from ADSL to Fibre (along with Digital voice)

Hi,

Thank you all for your replies.

Sorry for the confusion but I'm not currently on any Fibre package at the moment as FTTC wasn't available where I am and could only get ADSL previously. So still have a full ADSL connection and am only getting about 5 Mb/s which is the maximum speed I can get due to distance from the exchange. Therefore I am assuming that when moving to Full Fibre I should be getting up to 55 Mb/s?

As @iniltous  said, with "Full" Fibre (FTTP) there is no up to.  That only applies to Part Fibre (FTTC).  My mistake.  With full fibre it will be 55 Mb/s spot on.

Hi Licquorice

Thanks for your reply.

I've also got a phone downstairs which is next to the router and am aware that we would need to plug this into the hub, however if we are using the double ended BT431-BT431 to connect the hub to the master socket, can a double phone socket adaptor be inserted into the hub to allow it to be connected to the master socket and the downstairs phone at the same time?
