if you on 900 look on the package details and plug in via ethernet and re test speed
@gg30340 so with full fibre theres no actual downstream connection status ob rhe router it just act as link speed regardless of donstream ?
Of course, the router just reports the speed to the ONT which is always 1Gb regardless of speed to the ONT.
@shakey1981 Just as with a connection via a phone line, using FTTP the optical cable does not have a fixed transmission speed. However the connection from the ONT to the router uses ethernet cabling adhering to defined/recognised standards that include common line speeds and whether the connection is duplex (simultaneous transmit and receive) or not *and more*.
**For the record the link-speed from my 3rd party router the ONT is 2.5Gbps, but that's another story which I'm not fully briefed on.
Thanks for all the help and advice. I'm working from home today the speed over the wifi is only 160mbs however from what people have said about the BThome hub that's not surprising. However I did onnect my laptop with a short ethenet cable to the router the speed is 1.1mbs. My office is towards the back of the house where I have a gigabit switch linked back to the router with a cat 6 cable. When I connect to the gigabit switch by ethernet I get 430mbs. So potentially a faulty cable from the router to the gigabit switch. So will try another cable and have a look for a third party router to get better wifi. Still not clear why the original speed test were so up and down.
Why is it not surprising about the Smarthub. Did you not see the wifi speeds I posted when using a Smarthub2 ?
I did see your message regarding the Smarthub 2 and have been looking into a third party unit many thanks and sorry for not replying at the time.
See message 18.
If you are not getting abt 900mbps on Ethernet there is a problem that needs fixed.
@ncartwr Are you now getting the broadband speed what you’re paying for? On the MyBT app does it report the correct speed? If it does then it’s very unlikely there’s an issue with the SH2. Ideally access MyBT with a PC connected via its GigE Ethernet port to one of the 3 ports on the SH2. You should get matching Device and Hub speeds .
If that’s working fine then you can connect up your GigE switch and do the same check from one of its ports. At least this will check your physical connections.
There are a lot of people on this forum who are perfectly happy with the SH2.
And that's great.
But if you trawl through the Internet the reviews are pretty uniform.
It's a wifi 5 device from 2019.
BT in their quest to migrate everyone to EE broadband seem to have stopped development on it's own product.
EE offer wifi 6 router as standard with the option to upgrade to wifi 7.
Sky do the same.
It would now appear if you want the latest router technology you have to do what BT/EE want and leave BT for EE.
