Does the power cable from the ONT power supply go up or down?

Hello

Sorry very basic question but does the power supply for the currently fitted ONT box have the cable coming out of the top or bottom? Pictures I've seen on the net always show it coming out of the bottom.

I've got Openreach coming next week and it's just occurred to me that owing to the plug socket I'm intending to use being under a very fixed shelf if it's one of those that stick upwards jobs I could be in trouble. It would be just my luck if they changed it just in time to come to my house.

Supplementary question - I'm planning to have the router box in a temporary location about two metres away from the ONT box on a different plug socket. Trusting this will be OK. . . . . . .

Your thoughts gratefully received . . . .

Re: Does the power cable from the ONT power supply go up or down?

The ONT power cable can vary depending on the power supply, so I would not plan around the cable definitely coming out of the bottom. If the socket is directly under a fixed shelf, mention the space constraint to the Openreach engineer when they install it, they can usually position the equipment accordingly. And yes, having the router around 2 metres away from the ONT is perfectly fine. The router just needs an Ethernet connection to the ONT, it doesnt need to be plugged into the same socket.

The ONT and router can be 100 metres apart and on completely separate power supplies if required.

Presumably nothing preventing the ONT being mounted upside down if needed.

Thanks for the quick replies folks. Good news about the router location.

The engineer can I'm sure fit the ONT box any way he/she sees as suitable. that's fine. The potential problem is the plug socket. Some of these wall-wart type power supply plugs have the cable coming out of the top and some of them actually stick up quite a bit. That would be a problem as there's no space under the shelf. A standard downgoing plug would be totally fine. All the ones I've seen pictures of so far have been the downgoing sort - just like a traditional 13A plug fitted to most power cables.

Re: Does the power cable from the ONT power supply go up or down?

Do you mean the cable as it exits the terminal on the wall, (the ONT), or do you means the cable as it exits the plug-in PSU, (power unit)?

The cable comes out of the ONT at the bottom but there is about a metre and a half of cable, so bending round and travelling upward from there is no problem.

If you mean the cable as it comes out of the PSU, then mine is downward.  Mine was fitted fairly recently, (12 months), and is an Adtran 611.   I suspect there are other models where the lead comes out of the PSU at the top, so it may depend on what you get.  However, there is no reason why you can't plug a short extension lead into the socket and then the PSU into that.  It won't bother the PSU if it is upside down.

Or simply fit the socket faceplate upside down.

I had assumed the ONT end btw.

Re: Does the power cable from the ONT power supply go up or down?

Yes, we are talking about the wall plug low voltage supply (at least I assume that's what it is). Sorry if that wasn't entirely clear.

If anyone has come across and upwards-going one (recently) that would be very interesting to hear.  In the meantime, lots of potential suggested workarounds so I think we should get there on the day even if a bit of further work is needed later.

"Or simply fit the socket faceplate upside down" - Perfect. That would probably be the longer term answer if we're really in the mire, though wouldn't it be typical if when I came to fit the router up closer to the ONT box it had a plug going the opposite way? (It's a double socket).

Re: Does the power cable from the ONT power supply go up or down?

The lead on the Smart Hub 2 (SH2) PSU comes out at the top.  Don't know about the latest, the SH3, as I have yet to see one.

As Licquorice said, the lead from the ONT to the router is just standard cat 5e or cat 6.  It can be up to 100m long.

The SH3 also comes out at the top.

"The lead on the Smart Hub 2 (SH2) PSU comes out at the top"

"The SH3 also comes out at the top"

Whoops. Oh well. In the meantime it doesn't matter as it will be on a different socket anyway - we'll cross that bridge when we come to it I guess!
