Fibre Location Movement

Hello,

just a question , as not up to speed with bt / fibre.

we currently have fibre installed on an internal wall, which has a media wall surround, with tv central to the room. We are wanting to remove the media wall, but fibre is installed onto this, with the hub next to it.
Are BT able to move the fibre (we can take the media wall out in sections) and then have the hub extended with an Ethernet cable back to the centre of the room? We’re wanting to get the wall out ASAP but not sure where to start with fibre movement

thanks 😊

Re: Fibre Location Movement

What is it you want relocated , is it an  ONT ? ( that would mean you have FTTP, the  ONT is a mains powered box the router is connected to , it should have a PON light lit , to  indicate it’s connected to the FTTP headend .

If it is the ONT , how was the existing location chosen , was it  by the builder/developer when the property was originally being built, ( so a new build property that has never had copper pair service , it has only ever had FTTP, ) if this the case the existing optical cabling etc is ‘hidden’ behind walls etc , so relocating the ONT will never be as  ‘neat’ a finish,  the new location for the ONT will have to be surface wired from the CSP .

To get the ONT repositioned, you approach your ISP and ask for them to arrange a relocation of the ONT with Openreach , this is chargable work , expect to pay £120-£150 ish .

OR charge the ISP ( BT presumably in your case otherwise why post on a BT forum ) and the ISP charge you , probably in advance of the work being done .

This isn’t a common request so you may have to persevere if the order taker is unfamiliar with this type of thing , you won’t be able to do it on line .

Re: Fibre Location Movement

Hello,

We had the fibre installed January last year, when no plans to take the wall out. Unfortunately I’m not aware of your abbreviations and the meanings (sorry!) we chose the location when we had this fitted. we currently have a white box & a grey circle casing from where the cables come into the property. We are just wanting it moved a little further towards the back wall. I’ve added a photo to show the placement & what we have currently.

Re: Fibre Location Movement

Ok so not a new build , but that was really to point out that new builds have wiring hidden, but the process is as described..if BT are your ISP , you contact them , requesting a ‘shift’  of the ONT ( it’s likely it’s the ONT you are referring to ) ….BT arrange with Openreach to get the work done , which is similar in a way to when you first got FTTP installed, although it’s admittedly less work …you probably have have a grey plastic box on an external wall ( called a CSP ) they should run a new cable from there to wherever you want the ONT moved to , then relocate the existing ONT to the new location, this is the Openreach product the ISP ask for ,

Near the bottom is the entry , ‘ internal ONT shift’ , the price is what OR charge the ISP excluding vat , the ISP may charge you the same , may charge you less or charge more , that’s upto them but it’s a ballpark figure to give you an idea of the level of charge
