Full Fibre instalation on dwelling house

Go to solution

Hello everyone

I live in a block of flats and have been informed by EE that Full Fibre broadband is available at my flat. I checked the BT Broadband Availability Checker and received the information listed below, but I do not fully understand what work would be required to install the service.

My landlord (the owner of the flat) has confirmed that they are happy for any necessary equipment to be installed inside the flat. I currently have a standard telephone socket.

Could you please clarify the likely scope of the installation?

  • Is it possible that the Full Fibre installation would only require work inside my flat?
  • Or would external works to the building also be required?
  • If I place an order with EE, I understand that an engineer will visit. If the engineer determines that additional external works are needed, will I be informed before any work is carried out?
  • Would I be able to cancel the upgrade at that stage if my landlord does not wish to proceed with the required works? I will need to get permision from the bulding owner?
  • What happens to the existing telephone cable and socket serving my flat? Would these be replaced, or would new fibre cables need to be installed?

I am not familiar with the Full Fibre installation process. My understanding was that if Full Fibre is shown as available for my flat, this would mean that no additional work outside the property would be required. I would appreciate any help on how the process normally works for flats.

Our records show the following FTTP network service information for these premises:-Multi Dwelling Unit Residential MDU Built to Curtilage External Build required.

FTTP is available and a new ONT may be ordered.

The exchange is not in a current fibre priority programme

As a WLR withdrawal exchange, product restrictions apply

SOADSL is not restricted at the exchange

For all ADSL and WBC Fibre to the Cabinet (VDSL or G.fast) services, the stable line rate will be determined during the first 10 days of service usage.

For all SOADSL services, the stable line rate will be determined during the first 10 days of service usage.

Actual speeds experienced by end users and quoted by CPs will be lower due to a number of factors within and external to BT's network, Communication Providers' networks and within customer premises.

In order to be eligible for handback, downstream speed should be less than Downstream Handback Threshold values.

If you decide to place an order for a WBC fibre product, an appointment may be required for an engineer to visit the end user's premises to supply the service

ADSL, ADSL2+ and SOADSL availability: If shown at FTTP or SOGEA premises,ADSL, ADSL2+ and SOADSL are not available to order due to WLR Withdrawal stop sell rules. CPs should order FTTP or SOGEA. Copper products are only available by exception.

message 10 , the first order should prompt Openreach to approach the freeholder/Managing Agent or whoever to gain permission for the necessary works .

Hi @Beaveros

Great to hear you have permission to have Full Fibre installed in your home.

Any work would depend on the existing connection to your flat, if there is one.
This may be old copper, which would require an engineer visit to install or upgrade the wiring outside, as well as a terminal box installed inside.

What is Full Fibre broadband and How does it work? page shows a simple explanation of the difference between older technology and Full Fibre. This will be useful for you to identify what may be required.

Have a look at the following articles which describes with pictures what to expect on the full installation process from Openreach.

What will happen during my installation for Full Fibre

How is Full Fibre installed?

My Posts from 2024 are now longer valid.

5-10 Builds were stopped about a year or so ago.

They’re now 5-15 Reactive Builds that are Surveyed on the Day by the Build Team and Openreach do not contact the MA for them, it is up to the Sub placing the order to get permission and ensure the Asbestos Report is available if applicable.

How many flats are within the Building?

Theres different types of Build for MDU.

5 - 15 Reactive Builds. These are Surveyed on the Day by the Build Engineers who will decide how to best install the Network. This could be a Pushlok Building on the outside wall, Internal Breakout Boxes or External Breakout Boxes.

Openreach don’t approach the MA for Reactive Builds, it’s up to the person(s) placing the order to get permission as well as providing an Asbestos Report if the building was built before 2000.

Proactive Builds. builds of 16. Openreach Enablement will contact the building owner to get permission and once they have will Survey the Build and agree it with the owner.

Once the build itself is complete you’ll then be able to progress the installation into your flat. How that’s done is dependent on how the Network Build was done.
