Full Fibre

Go to solution

Just had the external work done for full fibre and waiting for “switch on” as it’s using a different telegraph pole.  Once we’re connected, which of the old stuff can I unplug and remove?  I know the Ethernet cables can come out of the hub but what about BT labelled (?booster) plugs?
thanks

Re: Full Fibre

did you get a new SH2 or did you already have one

all that is changing is basically you will have a faster connection to the hub but if you used 'booster' plugs to help with wifi then you still probably need to continue to use

Smart Hub 2

Not sure what you mean by Ethernet cables can come out of the hub. Any Ethernet connections you have will still be required. Do you mean the DSL connection?

We have 3 leads in the back of hub and we’re told they wont be needed when it’s all wiFi…

Hi @SewS and welcome.

Can you post a photo of the back of your hub so we can advise further.

Cheers

Re: Full Fibre

Obviously if you have ‘wired’ devices connected to any of the the Ethernet ports on the rear of the existing BT SH2 router , converting to FTTP won’t alter that , so if you have ( for example ) a smart TV , or a desktop computer wired to the hub, or devices plugged into powerline type adapters , that stays the same .

Currently your router will be connected to the copper phone line either at the ‘master’ socket or from an extension socket (that is connected to the master socket )  , when you get FTTP there is a ‘new’ device fitted , the ONT , this is mains powered and will connect to the WAN port on the SH2 router , the copper connection is no longer used.

Often the consumer will  choose to have the SH2 router and ONT sited close to each other so a short Ethernet cable can connect them together , within reason , you can request where you would like the ONT to be fitted,  it doesn’t have to be where the existing master socket is.

Unless you want to incorporate your existing phone sockets with ‘Digital Voice’ ( thats if you have chosen to take a phone service at all ) then the master socket may well become redundant and have nothing connected to it  after you are on FTTP .
