MDU Installation Guidance

Hi all,

So I live in a multi dwelling unit (MDU) and we recently had the fibre patch boxes installed above the flat doors (outside). I'm fairly tech savvy but don't know the ins and out of the process. So speaking to the guys that installed it on their behalf (different company) they said they done all the work in the building and can see the cable going into the comms cabinet.

Now I'm just trying to get an update when it possible be switched on and what's next? Is it a flip of a switch or is there more work need to be done from the cabinet to the flat with newer lines or something.

Not getting much luck or common sense from contact openreach.
Because I live in a MDU, get a generic message back, that only a landlord can get updates and being told they need permission from the landlord to carry out work, even though it's been done?

Just wanted to see if anyone had been insight on the workflow with the transformation of newer lines going in.
As I would like to finally be on a better connection 🙂

Kind Regards,
Rob

Re: MDU Installation Guidance

Are you sure this work was for Openreach ? , there are no ‘comms cabinets’ used in Openreach FTTP .

If it is Openreach , and it may be as Openreach do preemptively provide an access point outside each individual unit within the MDU , once the address is ready for service ,this allows an ISP of your choice to raise an order , the tech on the day of the appointment then brings in an optical cable from this point into the address and fits the ONT etc …if no order is raised , no further work is done , so if a unit never orders FTTP the box outside remains as it is , it’s only an order via an ISP that gets the final part of the installation done .

As far as how much time elapses between the boxes fitted outside each unit and being able to order can’t be predicted but obviously it’s in Openreach’s interest to make this period as short as possible.

Put your address in this checker , when it shows WBC FTTP as available then from OR point of view it’s ready to order , individual ISP may or may not be ready to offer services as they have their own interconnection to arrange but generally they will be ready

Search invisilight installation for an idea what’s done to complete an installation

Re: MDU Installation Guidance

Hey iniltous,

Thank you for the quick response.

There was a letter sent out by a company called completetechnology that done the work. Now just checking the email, which I had reached out to them, it does state that "Openreach have confirmed they are looking to connect the building with full fibre", but this was dated back early last month and work was done a little prior to that.

Sorry by the comms cabinet, I meant the cupboard where all the trunking goes for the TV, current phone lines etc. Where this goes from there, I'm guessing outside some where.

The reason why I wasn't sure if something from the flat to to the box needed any more work or was the case of flipping over.

Thank you for the link, it's a nicer way of seeing the details.

Re: MDU Installation Guidance

There is a company I read an article about , they wire up MDU (often local authority MDU) with their own internal FTTP infrastructure, (only the cabling inside the building) they then shop around looking for ‘partners’ to connect this internal infrastructure to the outside world via the network partners infrastructure, presumably they expect to collect a rental or part payment from the network or ISP or whoever for allowing access to their internal building network, this kind of arrangement is not common to the UK , but they may or may not be the company you quote as having provided the network inside your building.

It’s doubtful that this business model will ever work , certainly not with a network operator of the scale of Openreach , who , should the opportunity arise, will provide their own building cabling infrastructure not rent space in someone else’s infrastructure …for one thing , if Openreach used someone else’s internal network on this basis (ignoring the fee the building network operators would charge ) , if a fault develops, the ISP is on the hook for compensation to the consumer, Openreach is on the hook for compensation to the ISP , if this firm goes bust ,or has a policy of no compensation , OR are reliant on this  other companies repair timescales

This isn’t an arrangement that OR would ever sign up to, so if this company is claiming Openreach are one of their customers,  I’d want to see some sort of confirmation, it’s much more likely they phrase their communications to suggest an arrangement, something like ‘we partner with network operators like Openreach , rather than state they work with Openreach .

If it is this sort of arrangement in your MDU , it makes you no nearer to having access to BT as an ISP , they only use Openreach

Re: MDU Installation Guidance

Post some pics of the Breakout Boxes and Basement Box and or UFS2 and I’ll be able to tell you if it’s Openreaches gear.

Hey there,

Not sure you'll be able to get much from this. This what was being installed at the time and managed to get a picture. Now just a blanking plate over the top with a little laser sign.

It runs down the flat and then into the locked cabinets, so can't see what's on that end sadly.

Just got a email from the housing group :-

"We can advise that we are working with Complete Technology Group who are managing the installation of fibre within our block of flats.

CTG have confirmed they Openreach has not yet registered an interest with them to install fibre broadband in the block."

Then states I need to email CTG for updates.

Being that we currently on the old existing lines that Openreach would need to pull in new lines for the fibre?

The guys that installed the boxes only did work within the flats and no external bits as far as I know.

Thank again,

Rob

Re: MDU Installation Guidance

That's a good find and pretty much aligns with the constant back and fourths I'm having to deal with.

Only silver lining I think I can get from this mess is that apparently there appears to be a reference number with Openreach with my post code. Not that I can use or chase because of the whole MDU landlord silliness.

It's funny that the person stated they had got a lot more information from an engineers on site. Be on the lookout for Openreach vans all the time 🙂

Thanks again for your help and insight.

Guess it's just a waiting game for the two company work something out, whilst I nag to them 😁

Re: MDU Installation Guidance

I know Openreach use Double and Quadruple Port Breakout Boxes for External Build but internally the Breakout Boxes have always been Single Port and every flat gets their own, not one between 2.

Re: MDU Installation Guidance

From what I’m understanding this Company basically installs part of the Internal Network, in this case the Invisilite Fibre Cable, Breakout Boxes and most likely some kind of Basement Box and or Internal Type Splitter with the Intention of a Network Provider connecting their main cable feed and I assume ONT’s to it and I assume they will have to rent the use of the Internal Breakout Boxes.

If that’s the case I can categorically confirm Openreach would 100% not do that and would want to install their own Internal Splitter/Basement Box, Invislite Cable and Breakout Boxes.

To me it sounds like your MDU Owner/Management Company is trying to make money off it themselves as I bet they’ll want their piece of that Rental Money for the pre-installed Equipment.

As said, Openreach would never go for that and I seriously doubt the likes of CF and VM would either. Maybe one of the smaller more local Alt Nets but then you’d be restricted to using them and them alone so they can Jack up the price as much as they want because they aren’t regulated heavily like Openreach and can pretty much charge what they like.
