New full fibre broadband connection

I have been connected to the full fibre 500 as a new customer this morning. Do I have to wait for the speeds to settle because as it stands speeds are struggling to reach 100 mps? Don’t want to ring bt if it is a bit of a waiting game

@Bretheren57

Welcome to this user forum for BT Retail phone and broadband customers.

No, you get full speed right away, but only if you are directly connected to the home hub with a fast PC with a 1GB network card, and a suitable Ethernet cable.

It looks to me you are probably connected by wireless, or the wrong specification PC network card, perhaps one with only a 100mb interface.

Re: New full fibre broadband connection

I am connected via wifi to my iPad iPhone and MacBook ( haven’t checked the MacBook yet)  I can’t seem to find how to check the speeds to the router so have only checked via speed checker apps which are all giving the same lower speeds

You are not going to get anything like the full speed on wireless, only on devices that are directly connected using Ethernet.

No ISP will guarantee wireless connections.

Re: New full fibre broadband connection

I understand that but not even 1/5 of the advertised speed is not acceptable

Re: New full fibre broadband connection

The advertised speed is only up to the BT Home hub, anything after that is not covered by any agreement, as its the responsibility of the end user. For most people, a 100mb fibre package is more than enough unless you have a very large household who use a lot of bandwidth.

You are unlikely to get anything like the full speed over wireless, on a single device.

It was never intended that people get full speed on all devices, especially on a wireless connection. The intention is to allow that bandwidth to be shared among family members and multiple devices, without each user noticing any slowdown.

Here is a quote from old post from a BT moderator.

"I think for the first time ever we are in a situation whereby the speed you can now get through Full Fibre outperforms the capabilities of many devices.

The Smart hub 2 does not come with Wi-Fi 6 but this is something we are looking to include in our next generation of Hub.  I don't have any info as to when we will launch a new router by Wi-Fi 6 will bring some improvement.

As an example of what I mean in terms of devices not being able to support the full breadth of speed available on Full Fibre , take a look at the table below.  This is just for a couple of Apple Smart Phones and Tablets along with  popular Samsung models,

Apple (Smartphones) Dualband (2.4 & 5Ghz) Theoretical Max speed on 2.4Ghz connection Theoretical Max speed on 5Ghz connection
IPHONE SE Yes 60mbps 300mbps
IPHONE SE 2020 Yes 135mbps

600mbps

Samsung (Smartphones) Dualband (2.4 & 5Ghz) Theoretical Max speed on 2.4Ghz connection Theoretical Max speed on 5Ghz connection
galaxy-s10e Yes 135mbps 600mbps
galaxy-s10-5g Yes 135mbps 600mbps

Apple (Tablets) Dualband (2.4 & 5Ghz) Theoretical Max speed on 2.4Ghz connection Theoretical Max speed on 5Ghz connection
IPAD pro 3rd gen (Nov 2018) Yes 135mbps 600mbps
IPAD pro 4th gen (March 2020) Yes 135mbps 600mbps

Samsung (Tablet) Dualband (2.4 & 5Ghz) Theoretical Max speed on 2.4Ghz connection Theoretical Max speed on 5Ghz connection
galaxy-tab-s5e Yes 100mbps 300mbps
galaxy-tab-s6 Yes 60mbps

Re: New full fibre broadband connection

Thanks for posting that it confirms that the speeds I am getting are not acceptable given the capacity of the devices. As I said 80-100 speeds on a 500 line isn’t down to my devices

Re: New full fibre broadband connection

It confirms nothing. A wired test would show if you were getting full speed or not.

Re: New full fibre broadband connection

You need to run a speed test with a wired device, as BT will not accept speed test results over a wireless connection.

Bear in mind, this is only a customer to customer help forum, so if you are not happy with the wireless speed you are getting, you will have to raise the issue direct with BT.

You would not be the only person posting here, who have paid for a 900Mb connection, and expected it to improve wireless speeds.

Re: New full fibre broadband connection

Well BT are unable to complete a speed test  and as a result have confirmed a fault which is being investigated so as I suspected it isn’t as it should be
