New to BT (from Virgin)

Hello everyone,

I have just ordered Full fibre 10 as open reach have just installed my road which I’m very happy about, I’ve always wanted BT FTTP as I’m sick to death with virgin. Under load just didn’t cut it, years ago just after it switched from teletext broadband it was ok but these days it’s just saturated.

onwards and upwards!, anyway, I just came here to ask a couple of questions.

I still have virgin installed at the property, this shouldn’t be an issue correct?, I haven’t migrated I’ve now got 2 providers.

Regarding the super hub 2, do I have full access? Ie can use my own router, I also have a switch but I’m going to drop that anyway when BT comes. Also do I need to use some sort of BT modem? Or can I go direct from the fibre to my router?

I saw BT use dynamic ip is this similar to virgin where as you’ll get a very sticky dynamic ip?.

also just out of curiosity, what kind of pings do you guys get to common locations, ie London, Frankfurt, Paris, Amsterdam?.

if someone does reply regarding pings please also relay your location, I’m in Liverpool.

looking forward to getting the install!!

thanks guys any reply much appreciated.

Re: New to BT (from Virgin)

as long as you are not getting Digital Voice phone from BT then you can use your own router to connect and no need to BT hub   only if you get DV do you need to connect hub

Re: New to BT (from Virgin)

Hi thanks for quick reply, I think the router I have is a little old so might have to get a new one. What connection is required on router? So I can get the fibre direct?

Re: New to BT (from Virgin)

You can use your own router however BT/EE won't offer after-support if you are using third-party equipment and all of the routing itself will be your responsibility.

It is possible to use Digital Voice with a third-party router how ever again this would need to be coded in yourself and BT/EE would not offer any fault support as you are using third-party equipment.

Other threads on here will guide you with some of the routings.

It is recommended that you use the BT/EE equipment provided to have the after-support and compatibility with the package and equipment, but ultimately, it is your choice.

It is absolutely NOT possible to use Digital Voice with a third party router.

@Sickofvirgin The connection type is PPPoE

"What connection is required on router? So I can get the fibre direct?"

Openreach will install an Optical Network Termination (ONT) box in your house, which will terminate the fibre. From there an ethernet cable connects the ONT to your SH2, which has a dedicated broadband ethernet port on it which you can activate as a FTTP input. If you have your own router that presumably will have a similar ethernet FTTP input port as well.

Re: New to BT (from Virgin)

you need to use the BT SH2 connected to the ONT to get digital voice ( covered many times on forum) but you can then connect your own router to the SH2

Re: New to BT (from Virgin)

IP Voice is compatible with some third-party routers on the market.

The third-party routers would require their own coding to support any network IP voice service, so it isn't as black and white and you're are saying its not a NO.

I am familiar with people who have used their own coding to use Digital Voice on a thrid party router and there are threads on here with some coding on how to do it.

but I must stress it isn't advisable and BT wouldn't offer any support on how to do this.

Re: New to BT (from Virgin)

@TECHHERO1984 I repeat, it NOT possible to configure a third party router for Digital Voice.

BT Digital Voice is a proprietary system, not standard VoIP.

Please check your facts before posting misleading information.
