Had some weird issues with Fibre 900Mb speeds being erratic (80Mb-2.5Gb....yes Gb...).
Multiple engineer visits, fault on line fixed, WIFI good but LAN erratic and needed multiple router restarts to get speed above 700Mb. While trouble shooting at my end after line was fixed, it's possible a chipset/driver update may have poorly optimized my TCP/IP settings.
Running SpeedGuide.net :: TCP Optimizer / Downloads , setting slider to far right and selecting optimise sorted it, after months of tech support calls and no solution, hitting speeds (LAN) on average of 850-990Mb every since.
Do yourself a favour and rule out windows as the problem beforehand (in my case there was a fault with the FTTP line that needed fixed), the TCP issue came after.

And to forum member "pippincp", my thanks for saving me months of frustration.
Hopefully this may be of benefit to at least one person that had my experience. When you have ruled out hardware...software is usually the cause.

Glad you found it helpful.
I had exactly the same issue and same solution.
Re: Download speeds on BT FTTP slow when not using a VPN :: Fibre Broadband :: think broadband
I found that if using a VPN the connection speed was perfectly stable, just erratic without.
You sincerely have my gratitude, I would have gone around in circles with BT had I not come across your advice.
