Hi, I am due to get FTTP in the next couple of weeks. My router and network equipment is actually located in the middle of my house I.e. no external wall!!!
My current copper master socket is near the main door but years ago I installed some CAT6 under the floor to the location where the network equipment is, BT we're happy with this and recognise that my Master socket is located here and even put a blanking plate over the one near the door.
I have no power near where the current master blanking socket (where the external cable comes into the house), so the ONT cannot be installed there.
Ideally I'd like the BT engineer to run the cable into the house under the floorboards - I am happy to go under and pull the cable through the spiders webs and dust and up into my network equipment area. Would they support this?
Alternatively would they be happy to run the cable around the exterior of the house into my garage (House is built over the garage and I've already put some cat6 in to my network equipment area from the garage)? Alternative would be a 1st floor install into my lounge for the ONT behind the TV and once again I've already run some CAT6 to the network area.
Concern with the Garage and Lounge option is that they'd need to pull the cable around the front of my house (past the main door and across a gable end)
Current Cable is attached from the pole to the RED circle in the image below - Then goes across the top of the door and down the left hand side before entering the wall next to door frame. If I have the cable into the lounge or garage then this would mean the fibre from the pole assumed to connect to same red dot then move around the house down the left hand side where the path goes up under the satellite dish.
Any advice?
TBH , anything suggested on here can be nothing more than just an opinion, the final arbiter will be the installer in conjunction with you , although the existing bracket for the copper dropwire is usually reused, a different attachment could be fitted , possibly to the left of the window above the garage at a similar height to the existing one ….generally the overhead cable runs down to a safe working height to the location of a CSP , so the obvious entry point for the ‘internal’ cable to the ONT would be on the garage wall (assuming the ladder fixings can be installed on that wall to make the ladder work safe ) , you could then run your own Ethernet cable from the garage to your preferred location for the router/network etc .
The points to have in mind are safety, can what you want be done safely, and (relatively) quickly, as far as cabling under a floor with you doing the work , some installers may agree , others won’t , that’s impossible to predict, but with an eye to the future, should you make something difficult to access in the future, any problems should they arise will clearly be more problematic.
How big is the gap between the floorboards that a grown man can fit between them?
Regardless of how big it is I doubt any Openreach Engineer and or one of the many Contractors they use will do so, not even for a drink and some biscuits. Just not worth the hassle because if something goes wrong and they hurt themselves and or damage something then they’ll just get pulled up on doing something they’ve been told not to do and face Disciplinary Action, which could mean losing their job.
