Using LAN cables with Full Fibre

Go to solution

I have signed up for Full Fibre installation and have some questions.  I understand that I will need a new kind of router. Will I be able to use LAN cables with this new kind of router?   Currently I run a LAN cable to my laptop from the router and a very long LAN cable to the TV so that I do not need the WiFi switched on. (I prefer not to use WIFi).    Currently, if I need to switch the WiFi on, I can do that through the Hub Manager on my laptop. Will this all be the same with the Full Fibre router?

Also if I find at some point in the future I need a medical alarm, can this be done at a later date - that is after I will have had Full Fibre installed and have no landline?

Thank you

Yes Ethernet cable work with Full Fibre. You can use CAT5e but Cat6 is better. It can be run up to 100 meters.

The new hub which may be a Smarthub 3  is managed in exactly the same way as the previous hubs.

The alarm can be added at a later date.

If you are currently a BT customer with a smart hub2, nothing will change. You will just connect the hub to the fibre modem (ONT) instead of the master socket.

The only downside is that you will lose LAN port 4 as a LAN port as it will become the WAN port to connect to the ONT, hence you will only be able to connect 3 devices via LAN cables. If you require more ports, 4 port Ethernet switches are very cheap.

If you do not already have a Smarthub you may get a Smarthub3 when you move to Full Fibre. It has four LAN ports that can be used.

It has a WAN port to connect to the ONT which saves the need to use a LAN port like with the Smarthub 2.
