sites.google.com unavailable on BT connection

Go to solution

Today I have suddenly been blocked from accessing sites.google.com.

I can access if I tether to my mobile so there is nothing wrong with google. The block is coming from BT

It’s also affecting EE as well, as can access them if I manually change DNS , so it is a problem with BT DNS

I am having the same problem. As a freelancer I work on multiple Google Sites and sites.google.com is not accessible. It is if I use my phone as a hotspot. The websites themselves are accessible but not the editing part.

Re: sites.google.com unavailable on BT connection

I was on a helpdesk online chat with BT for ages. Tried everything they said, nothing worked and the agent just ended the chat!

Anyway, this worked for me on my Windows laptop:

Control Panel Home > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Centre > Change Adapter Settings

Right-click on Ethernet then select Properties

Internet Protocol Version4 (TCP/IPv4) > Properties

Check Use the following DNS server addresses (then change to Google's DNS servers):

Preferred DNS server: 8   8   8   8

Alternative DNS server: 8   8   4   4

Then select OK.

Have you checked that you do not have BT Web Protect turned on.

To check go to your MyBT then "Your Security".

Re: sites.google.com unavailable on BT connection

I'm having a nightmare! I am a BT Customer and spent the last 2 months making my wedding website on Google Sites.

I tested it and tested it and tested it. Bought my own QR Code and spent a lot of money getting the paper invites prepared with the QR code linking to the wedding website. I sent this invites out on Monday.....then on Tuesday BT blocked google sites.

And now every BT Internet customer (and EE I'm led to believe) including myself, cannot access my webśite!!

BT what is going on??!! This is not a user issue but an issue with BT service!

Please fix this ASAP

Agree this is a joke!

This worked yesterday so knew that there was little chance of anything I’d changed.

hopefully BT get this fixed asap as I need access to these sites for work!

I need this fixed ASAP.

I just sent my Wedding invites out, which is pretty much a fancy QR code pointing to a Google Sites page.

It cost me a fortune and now the website isn't working and BT are making me look like a fool.

Turning off Web Protect didn't make any difference but changing the DNS server address in Windows did. Also in Android.

Tried it with Google DNS and with Open DNS; both worked fine. Also sites.google.com accessible over Three's 4G network.

Using a VPN also worked.

Pretty sure that there's something wrong with the default DNS server address that's programmed into the Smart Hub. I believe you can't change the DNS server in the Smart Hub; perhaps someone can confirm.

Should I phone all my invitee's who have BT and tell them to do that?

It's a BT issue which need to be fixed at their end.
