How can SIM-swap fraud be prevented?

I've just seen the below scam warning on Which...looking at the text in I've highlighted in red in the last paragraph, can anyone tell me how I can get BT to provide the recommended extra security for my mobile number? I've logged into My BT and then into my account for my mobile, but I don't see any option to do it in there?

"Reports of scammers hijacking phone numbers to steal bank security codes and get into online accounts have doubled year-on-year, Which? warns.

It can be staggeringly easy for a scammer to steal your number. They start by collecting personal information about you from social media, previous data breaches or phishing messages and phone calls.

They contact your mobile network provider posing as you - over the phone, online or in-store - to convince it to switch your number to a new Sim card that they possess, using the personal information they gathered to pass any security checks. They may stick with the same network, pretending the old Sim is missing or damaged, or ask to switch to a new network by requesting the Porting Authorisation Code (PAC)."

One of the steps that Which recommends to prevent Sim-swap fraud to secure your mobile account is to ask your network provider about any additional security, for example, you may be able to set up a unique Pin or password which must be provided to approve any account changes in-store or over the phone"

Re: How can SIM-swap fraud be prevented?

I don’t think they offer this at present.  (I’d be interested in setting it up myself, if they do…anyone?)

I’m not sure if it helps you but as it says, they often have personal info from other breaches etc.

Just as you should not use the same username and password, I also never use the same security questions.  They may ask, for example, where were you born?  I use a different place with every account.  It can even be something silly as it doesn’t need to be real information just so long as you keep a record of what you’ve used where.
