At my wits end with BT!

I am absolutely screwing at BT, long story short..

A few years ago i lived with my father in law and my partner as we were saving for a house and the BT account was in his name, we moved properties twice within a year and BT kindly moved the broadband over to each property whilst we moved. The 2nd property we moved into (my current address) is mine and my partners address and always has been and my father in law no longer lives here, he moved abroad about 2 years ago. I rang BT to inform them of this and asked if i could take over the account which the gentleman on the phone agreed to and setup a direct debit from my account, i have been paying this for the last 20 odd months. I have rang BT to find out when my current contract ends to which they asked to speak to my father in law, which i have no contact with at the moment and i was expecting this account to be in my name which was agreed when we moved with the gent on the phone, i was advised they are unable to speak to me even though i pay the direct debit and she also said that someone on this account has passed away and they also cant give me any information? i am completely at a loss what to do, i cant contact my father in law at the moment and BT today have now taken away my access to my app and online so i physically cant do anything with this account apart from pay the bill? I AM STUCK ARGGGHHHH!

All i want to do is ask BT when this contract ends and what are the options for my own home that BT are supplying broad band to? can anyone shed some light on what to do next please? The lady i just spoke to said to go online and cancel the contract which would then leave a bill in my father in laws name (i cant even access the appp anymore) and my father in law lives abroad.. disappointed to be dealt with this was a customer of BTs

Re: At my wits end with BT!

Cancel the account online. Any final bill would be paid by DD from your account.

Once cancelled open a new account in you  name.

Re: At my wits end with BT!

1. Whose name do BT claim the account is in? If they claim it is in your father's name, stop paying. Let them sue a dead man.

2. If they say it is in your name, stop paying unless they quickly amend all the errors. Cease payment on the basis they have broken their own contract.

3. If you don't want to follow the above, go to the Communications Ombudsman but leave open the details about whose name the account is in. If the Ombudsman says he cannot further the complaint because the account is not in your name, then stop paying BT.

Keep copies of ALL messages to and from BT for future reference.

It's my general experience that BT's systems are generally **bleep** but that the human personnel who work for BT trying to resolve the problems are generally kind and helpful. It might be you and BT have some crossed wires somewhere. However, thanks to BT's **bleep** systems, getting refunds could be difficult if you pay money you are not responsible for and not getting a service for. Unless BT can show you have a legal responsibility to pay for a service you are receiving, stop paying.

Re: At my wits end with BT!

The mistake right from the start is that it is not possible to transfer ownership of an account. Payee can change but not account owner.

Re: At my wits end with BT!

I would not just suddenly stop payment if I were you.  That could have a negative effect on your credit rating, which is then difficult to remove.

If you look at the bottom of this screen, on the grey banner, you will see a reference to "Complaints code".  In that document are the contact details for the executive level complaints team.  They have more lee-way to make a decision than the helpdesk staff.

Re: At my wits end with BT!

Thank you all, no one in my family has passed away to my knowledge but the lady said they would never give me any information apart from someone has signed a document?

I will start with the ombudsman and see where we get, even though i pay the bill she would not give me any information but hey ho

Re: At my wits end with BT!

The ombudsman will only get involved if you are deadlocked.  That will require a deadlock letter from BT.  Try the team I suggested first.
