Hi, when ordering broadband as a new customer, why is there 2 options now? Broadband only and broadband and phone. On broadband only, can you still receive calls? Why is g.fast only available via broadband and phone. Why is broadband and phone more expensive? Thanks.

No calls at all with broadband only.
Extra cost if you want a phone service.
I thought broadband only might be digital voice, if it’s not, then any idea what that is/when that’s used? Also, do you know why broadband only isn’t available with g.fast? Thanks.

Broadband only is delivered down the copper wire feeding your house, or via optical fibre if you have that instead. You get no phone service with that. If you add a phone service, then that is delivered over the broadband connection, and is called BT Digital Voice.
As for G.Fast, I suspect its a technical issue relating to the line quality without any voltage on the line.
Why is digital voice used if a phone service is added to a broadband only service later on? Why wouldn’t they just use the existing copper line? Thanks.

Ask OFCOM. All providers will have been changed to digital voice by 2025 .... well, that is the plan.
it is PSTN which is ending but the copper line will still be used for broadband for adsl and FTTC connection just there will no phone calls over the copper by 2025

The reason for this, is explained on this two page website.

If you take out a new broadband and phone service from BT, will that use digital voice as well?
If a new BT customer wanted telephony with their broadband connection then it’s almost certainly going to be DV ( as already stated , the PSTN switch off coming along , so it makes sense for new connections to be provided with the non PSTN phone service , rather than providing PSTN and having to convert it to DV ( along with many many others ) at some point in the future but before the end of 2025.
Many consumers were complaining of paying for a ‘landline’ when they never made phone calls , although that was never really accurate, what presumably they really meant was , they didn’t use landline telephony so why are they charged for it , ( obviously broadband uses a line copper or fibre and it needs to be paid for via ‘line rental’ ).
BT have responded , and now offer broadband without the need to take telephony , and it’s a little cheaper too, so it’s would be a little odd for people to complain that the DV telephony service should be included with broadband, because you would still get the complaints of ‘why am I paying for a phone service I don’t use’ brigade.
It doesn’t matter if the phone service is DV or PSTN , consumers now have the choice , telephony or no telephony with their broadband, with the ‘no telephony’ option, there are no calls at all, no incoming , no outgoing , their is no dialtone , no phone number.
