Call from a 01438 number

Just taken a call from a 01438 number who knew my name and told me my broadband contract was coming to an end and did I want to renew because it would be cheaper.

My current 24 month contract doesn't expire until March 2026.

Was this a spam call or a genuine BT call?

Google the whole number that usually indicates whether a number is genuine or a scammer.

@CanardNoir  If the full number happens to be 01438382072, then it’s very likely to be the BT Retentions Team based out of Stevenage.

I had multiple calls from that number when I initiated my switch away from BT. I never answered the calls because as far as I was concerned, they were nuisance calls. Not once did they leave a message stating what their business was. In the end, I blocked the number.

A Google search was inconclusive but given there is still quite a long time left on my current contact I think I'll conclude it wasn't really BT calling.

@CanardNoir  Knowing that the BT Retentions call centre operates out of Stevenage with that local area code, it’s highly likely it is BT Retentions calling you. However as is your right to dismiss the notion, I wouldn’t be surprised if you get further calls.

The full number should still be in your recent callers list if you haven’t deleted it? Why they feel it’s necessary to call you 6 months before your contract expires, I can only conclude they are perhaps trying to upsell a new package in order to retain you. If you feel uncomfortable about them calling you, just block the number and report them a nuisance caller.
