Emails for somebody else

I’m repeatedly getting emails suggesting I’ve signed up for broadband from BT. I have not.

My email address is my name, and it appears somebody else has the same name and a similar email address and has mistyped it. Other details such as the installation address and bank details are not mine so I’m not worried about identity theft etc.

I’ve tried on 5 separate occasions now to get BT to resolve it, 3 times in chat and twice on the phone. Sometimes they say it’s been resolved and then it happens again. Sometimes they say there’s nothing they can do. Sometimes they need me to validate an account that I’ve already repeatedly said isn’t mine.

BT don’t force you to validate your email address prior to signing up for services, which means they keep sending me enough details to constitute a GDPR breach. I have the customer’s name, BT account number, address, and part of their bank details including enough to identify who their bank is. I can also google their name and the area they live in, and find out details of the printing company they are a director of. I also know the date of their installation, which itself is a concern, as I could theoretically rock up at their house in a rented white van and flash a hastily printed ID card at them on that date and say I need access.

Does anybody have an idea of how else I can get hold of somebody at BT who will take this seriously? I’d hate to think of my details being sent to some random in this manner and I’m fed up giving up my time trying to resolve something that really has nothing to do with me. Being selfish, I’m sick of the emails too.

The highlight was the chat agent who said they couldn’t change the account to stop emailing me their details, because they need to preserve the account holder’s security.

For the record, I’m not a BT customer.

@sprouty76

This is just a customer to customer help forum, everyone here, including myself, are just customers.

The only BT Employees are the forum moderators, I will ask one of them to assist.

Re: Emails for somebody else

I know it’s a customer to customer help forum. My question was if anybody knew anyway I could contact BT in order to get them to take it seriously, because I’ve exhausted all of the ways I can find and I’m kind of at the point where I want to empty the guys bank account just to teach him a lesson about not trusting BT!

Re: Emails for somebody else

Done. Bit alarmed that you asked for a description of the issue and details of my relationship with the account holder which suggests you haven’t read my original message…
