I think someone needs to be at home as you have no idea if the work already done is working until the external work and connections are completed. No point in external work being done and then you come home and find the connection does not work and openreach needs to come back
Although the internal work ,( the installation of the ONT and optical cable to the external CSP ) may have been physically completed, at the time this was done , there was no optical path from the ONT to the OLT ( headend equipment ), part of a normal installation is for the ONT to be authenticated onto the OLT , this is done by the installer using the unique serial number of the ONT and an application on the technicians business phone , so although there isn’t anything left physically to install internally, this authentication stage still needs to be completed.
It is technically possible ( but not the normal process ) for the consumer to read out the ONT serial number while on the phone to the the appropriate OR back office , who could enter the ONT information manually ( rather that the engineer doing it via an app ) but its probably a lot easier just to make access available for the Openreach tech on the appropriate day.

The engineer that did the internals stuck the bar code of the ONT onto the external box.
Does that make it possible to complete the install? If not I will have to postpone and hope the next available date is not too far away.
Yes, if one of the stickers with the bar code from the ONT was also put on or in the CSP , then provided the ONT is powered , then arguably no access is needed , the engineer could perform the authentication task at the CSP , but if there was an issue and ( for example ) a power cycle of the ONT were necessary ( switching it off and on ) this wouldn’t be possible, and if everything seemingly went OK ( the engineer getting an ‘authentication successful’ message ) this only refers to the ONT , ( what Openreach are responsible for ) if the BT router for whatever reason had no internet access , you would have that issue to contend with when you returned home.
I just checked. The ONT has one sticker / bar code on it and the external box has the same.
So I'm going to take the risk that they can complete the work without anyone being at home.
I'll make sure all is plugged in and powered up inside.

It's always probable that if there is nobody home when engineer turns up he just walks away to his next job
Thats true - but surely they still have to run the external fibre in irrespective.
Today I received an update to say that engineers will complete the external works to my house on 21st April !!
Its 1315 and no sign of anyone.
MyBT says the same for external works, and that they will do the internals on the 24th, but I changed that to the 2/5 when I will be home. Still not convinced they need to do anything inside.
Don't worry, I've had it all installed since the 12th of April and I'm still without internet now. That's with BT and OpenReach both saying that everything is working on their end
