A friend is offering me a Hybrid Connect box and I already have a Smart Hub 2 (but Fibre 1 now, not Halo 3). Will I need to pay for the 4G service or does that come with the hardware? I can't easily test it because he has to post it to me.

Halo is a paid for service add on. It is not just a case of getting the box and plugging it in.
I believe the Hybrid Connect unit is only loaned by BT, for the duration of the contract, and will need to returned, or the customer will be charged. The 4G service is part of that contract, so will be disabled if their contract ends.
