Having just spent quite some time on the 0330 1234 150 support number trying to get an old account removed from my BT ID, I thought I would post here for feedback and in the hope that a helpful moderator might hove into view and come up with some clever alternatives.
During the process of setting up a new BT account at a new address (using my original old BT ID), I noticed my old account number and address still associated with my ID. The old account was shut down over a year ago.
Having discussed at length and waited on hold whilst the very nice assistants tried their best to help they eventually apologised and said there was no longer any straightforward means of them doing this. They apparently have no process available to them on their systems.
They have passed it on up the line to their manager, but have suggested if this does not work I need to ask for them to delete the BT ID entirely and then start again from scratch. I would then be able to re-use the original BT email address I want for my BT ID and then associate the new account number with the fresh ID.
Why is it so hard to remove an old account from a BT ID? Surely there should be a simple means of getting this done and why isn’t there?
Anyone understand why this should be so difficult to resolve?
Thinking about it are there also Data Protection implications of this failure to remove old details? Storing information safely and privately is clearly key as regards GDPR rules, but what about the responsibility to remove our data that there is no longer any justification for them keeping on their systems? When an account is closed why is all the information still there over a year later?

Thank you. I will give that a try now, but I am pretty sure that I was speaking to that team on the phone. It should be a straightforward easy process and they as much as admitted that they had no way to remove my old details.
Where is a moderator when you need one?
Hi @MikeSeal
Thanks for posting, I can get this looked at for you.
I've sent you a private message asking for some details.
Thanks
