I cancelled all my BT services back in December, since then my account has been settled in full and the balance is £0:00 Today I received notification that my bill is ready and sure enough the balance is £0:00 yet it still gives me a date when my next bill will bw ready, presumably that will also be for £0:00
Can anyone advise if this is normal practice and if so when will the billing stop

Do you still have a BT email account? If so I believe that BT keep a Billing no charge account open for you on your MyBT so that the email does not get deleted.
I managed to speak to someone late yesterday afternoon and he pretty much confirmed what you say.
I say pretty much because it seemed like a bit of a mystery to him, he said he'd been working for BT for years and had never seen that happen before.
He said he would suppress any future billing notifications meaning that bills for £0.00 would continue to be raised but I wouldn't be notified of them.
Seems a strange solution to me but I'll see how it goes.
This is BT remember, they do things differently!
