BT Protect with own Router

Go to solution

Hi,

We have received an email informing us that BT Protect is now enabled on our account.

I am presuming from the information on this page https://www.bt.com/help/security/learn-about-bt-web-protect that it works via DNS, but we use our own router rather than the Homehub we were given and have custom DNS addresses because they're faster than BT's default ones.

I cannot find exactly how BT Protect works - do we need to be using BT's DNS servers and if so what are these?

Many thanks,
UKBedders

@UKBedders

BT Web Protect only works if you use BTs DNS servers. If you use your own DNS, then you will not get any protection.

All that Web Protect does, is to validate any DNS requests, and block those which do not point to a genuine website, and which could be attempts to redirect people to a fake site.

Thanks @Keith_Beddoe, I appreciate your fast response. That's how I was expecting it to work.

For the sake of completing my own thread - BT's DNS servers according to https://www.increasebroadbandspeed.co.uk/uk-isp-dns-server-settings are:

62.6.40.178
62.6.40.162
194.72.9.38
194.72.9.34
194.72.0.98
194.72.0.114
194.74.65.68
194.74.65.69
