BT TV Box connection the Smart TV

Go to solution

Have a BT TV box, and it is plugged into an Ethernet mini hub.  Works just fine. But have just bought a new smart tv. I’ve connected it to the BT hub via an HDM1 connector. Am receiving EETv and TNT channels just fine. So good, so far.

But I can’t connect the TV to the internet via my BT broadband so I can’t access any Apps. Message says that internet not found. Should I be connected to the BT Ethernet?

Shouldn't the TV be connected to the BT hub with an ethernet cable rather than an HDMI cable?

I’m not sure. The old TV wasn’t. When we installed the BT TV box, we were told to purchase the mini hubs as my BT internet hub is in another room.

it worked just fine on the old TV.

The TV will be able to connect via wi-fi. Check the network settings on your Smart TV and find your Hub, you'll probably have several routers/Hubs displayed. Yours will have the strongest connection with a padlock next to it. Click on that and type in the password. (The password will be listed on your Hub at the rear).

Thanks Hunter, that’s what I tried to do in the initial setup, but error message states ‘can’t connect to the internet, try again or try another network’. I tried many times.

Perhaps telling us the make and model of the new smart TV will be useful information.

Thanks @Caz3, this model should definitely work via WiFi.

I connect my smart TV to my BT Hub via WiFi with no issues and I can't think of any immediate reason why this model would be different.

Unless you have changed this manually, the correct network name and connection key should be listed on the slide-out card on your Hub, so make sure you're using all the right details.

This will all be identical regardless of whether you're connecting to the main Hub or an extender, too.

Please keep us posted on how you get on 😊

Re: BT TV Box connection the Smart TV

Hi Peter

thanks for your response. I agree, it should connect to my BT hub wifi, but it doesn’t. I reattached my old TV and discovered that it was never connected to WIFI either, but I’ve always been able to access all the Apps, recordings, streaming services etc. presumably all via the BT TV box. Maybe my Wifi just doesn’t reach where my TV is located. I’ve never used the smart tv to access the internet so I wouldn’t have realised.

So, I have an update! Issue resolved.  Yesterday, I couldn’t access anything, other than the scheduled programmes. I tried via the blue Home button on my BT remote, and  it was completely unresponsive. I try again this morning, and hey presto,  everything is working as it should. I’ve got access to all the streaming Apps.  It’s a mystery!

thank you everyone who too the time to respond.

Thanks for the update here, @Caz3.

I'm glad to hear all looks to be working as it should be with your TV Box 😊

As for the TV - if this was an issue of range then it would be a case of the network not showing up full stop, or it would give an indication of very weak signal.

If you see any particular error messages when trying to connect this please let us know and we may be able to troubleshoot.
