Extremely slow operation of YouView box

Recordable TV Box (500Gb) has become painfully slow in operation last week or so. Been into Maintenance Mode menu and it recommended a 'Software Reset'. Done this but still the same. We have had the box for several years without any issues but now its becoming unusable. Have had a clearout of unwanted recordings and now has 74% free space. Not carried out a Reset (Keep Recordings ) yet. Would rather not do a full wipe and reset as we have recordings we dont want to delete.

Re: Extremely slow operation of YouView box

Had exactly the same issue after the EE rebrand. Switched on the box one day after Christmas and it was sitting in maintenance mode - I did do a software reset, keep recordings, and it came back up with the YouView branding and was much more respsonsive - it did update again overnight and is back with EE branding and is slower than it was, but not as bad as after the first time it rebranded. Worth a try, all recordings intact.

Re: Extremely slow operation of YouView box

Just a final update to help other users. After a factory reset/keep recordings didn't fix the issue I contacted online tech help. After half hour of various questions and operations of the box, they agreed the box was faulty and would immediately send out a new one free of charge. This was received 3 days later after the weekend. New one all set up and working. After watching our old recordings decided to do a full wipe/reset to factory/delete everything. Unbelievably all working ok. Faulty box returned, as have fully set up the new one now, and expect the old one will eventually become faulty again.

Not so unbelievable - happens a lot. The disc structure of the YouView box gets corrupted, and suddenly you  can’t make recordings, can’t play back existing recordings, lose your lists, and so on.

But nothing is actually wrong with the box, and most often there isn’t even anything wrong, at the hardware level, with the disc; it’s just that the recording indexes are messed up, so it can’t find anything any more.

The factory reset wipes the disc clean, reformats it, and suddenly it is almost like a brand new box, ready for more recordings and everything.

The trouble is that YouView never put in the effort to provide a maintenance mode that deals, as best it can, with a corrupted disc, saving what it can, cleaning out what it can’t, and generally doing the best rescue possible.

Something which even the much reviled Microsoft Windows does as a matter of course; though the stakes are arguably higher on a laptop than on a YouView box.
