554 Message rejected for policy reasons 2.1.2.1

I have sent a mail several times to someone with a btinternet email address. This is rejected (554 Message rejected for policy reasons - 2.1.2.1.).

Could someone explain where I can find the meaning of this policy reason? When I send the same message from a different mail address (from the same mail package) it is delivered without problem, so I assume it is not a problem with the recipient's mail addres. Given the provider I am sending from it would be a bit strange that something is wrong.

Any help, specifically where to look for the details of this policy reason, or what to look for in the details provided in the rejection mail, would be very welcome.

Don't supply your full email address that you are sending from but do supply the domain.

Could you please explain in a few more words as I am not an expert in this area. Do you mean that instead of using as sender joe.blogs@btinternet.com I should just put btinternet.com?  Would that be accepted and would I not get error messages from my own email program?

No. In order to try and assist I want to know what email domain you are sending the email from. ie the last part of your email address.

The email or the domain may be being blocked because your domain does not comply with BT's "best practices" and possibly because it is not a UK domain and may be blacklisted.

Have a look at this link to ensure that the domain complies and if it does you could try contacting the BT Postmaster at the address supplied in the link and ask if the domain or at least your full email address can be white listed.

You could also ask the intended recipient to add your email address to his/her safe senders list found in their email settings.

Re: 554 Message rejected for policy reasons 2.1.2.1

OK Thanks.

My original question was the meaning of the code 2.1.2.1. I have seen messages on this forum with various codes, and I asssume the code is specific so "someone" knows what the actual problem is. I would have assumed it would be easy for BT to publish a list of the codes and a description of which specific check failed. But maybe keeping this classified means less information for those sending spam and a few complaints is a small price to pay.

It is not an exclusive code to BT. If you carry out a web search on the 554 message you will find numerous web sites explaining how that message can come about.

It wasn't the 554 that I was looking for but the policy 2.1.2.1. That code seems to be BT specific.

I have no idea what it means, you will need to ask BT.
