Emails disappeared from inbox but sent etc all ok

Two weeks ago I found that most of my emails had vanished inexplicably from inbox - other folders are fine.  Emails that arrived since the problem occurred are also fine.  I have spent ages talking to bt and ensuring that all the obvious possible causes have been eliminated.  I’m now being passed from one helper to another with still no clue as to what has happened and promised callbacks failing to happen - the latest is the “outsourced (!) expert server team”.  Has anybody else had this experience? How did you escalate the issue?  Is there any hope of recovering my information?   Any help, advice will be greatly appreciated  TIA
