It seems that you cannot use a custom email address to register because the verification email never arrives.
I had to use a different email address to register and then I got the verification email. However if I then changed back to my normal address it wanted to verify it again which of course does not work.

Which service are you trying to register for? Have you checked your spam/junk folder for any verification emails?

For my own reasons, I tried to register for the community using a mail.com address.
The verification email was not received, even after multiple attempts.
I used ".org.uk" which it didn't like.

I read your private message. I think the best thing to do is speak with your email domain host. They may be able to explain why you aren't receiving the verification messages.
