I have now been put onto the new email set up how can I view messages just showing subject line and not the first line of email please

You can not change they way the message line is displayed to the way you want.

You might want to consider using an email client/app which will use it's own interface and will be able to be configured the way that you want it, not the way that BT want it.

I use outlook on my main computer but like to check on my phone or lap top . This way I keep coI am sure I will get used to it but it is  does not seem to have improved things

Install an email client such as Thunderbird on you laptop and an email app such as Bluemail on your phone and set them up as IMAP and they will synch with the BT email servers and replicate any folders you have on BTMail. 

If you do that you will not need to access webmail and use the "new" email interface.

I have assumed that your Outlook email client is already set up as an IMAP account and not a POP3 account.
