The forwarding function refuses to work with my BT email. I just get a message saying 'We are experiencing problems with this service, please try again later'. Any suggestions?
Are you presently a BT Broadband customer or are you paying for your email through a BT Premium email account?

By forwarding do you mean forwarding a received email to another recipient or auto forwarding your emails to another address automatically?

I mean forwarding a received email to another recipient. It worked fine until a short while ago when I suddenly started getting the 'problems' message.

Are you using BT Webmail when experiencing this issue, the BT Email app, or a separate client?

Not very clued up on such things but certainly not using the BT app and not as a client; just ordinary BT email page opened in Chrome.
Thanks @Mysterfier, have you had a chance to try logging in from a different device or browser to see if this encounters the same issue?

Just tried logging using MS Edge. same problem encountered

Are you using a private browsing window when logging in?
Also if possible can you try a different device, and try leaving your WiFi router off before reconnecting and give this another try?
