Outlook 2007 network password

Go to solution

Well, this is probably a long-shot, but I'm not really sure what else to try...

I had to reset my laptop, as it was performing poorly.  This uninstalled all my apps and now I have reinstalled Outlook 2007, it wants me to sign in, but I've forgotten my network password.  Does anyone know if this is something BT can help with by resetting it on their end and sending me a one time use password, or something, which I can use to access my account and then reset the password on my end?

I don't know if ir matters for the purpose of this question, but it's a POP3 account.  I know it's outdated, but I like the layout and have a lot of emails stored on the account, which don't appear in my webmail, so I need to keep hold of it for now at least.

Anyway, enough of my rambling and thanks in advance for any advice.

If by 'network password', you mean the password to log into your BT email then BT should be able to reset that for you.  You’ll need to phone them.

Just be aware that if you have BT basic mail, and not the premium version, I think you can now only access it via the webpage.  (Not entirely sure on that, as I don’t use BT mail myself).

Incidentally, the reason you can only see your email on your laptop is because you are using POP3.  POP transfers your mail from BT’s server to your laptop and doesn’t keep a copy.  If you used the more up to date IMAP, you would see your mail on both your laptop and BT’s server as the server does keep a copy until you delete the mail.

Thanks for the quick response!  I will try phoning BT as you suggest 😊

That is not entirely correct. With POP3 you can set it to leave a copy of Incoming emails on the server in which case there would be a copy of the Incoming email on both the BT servers and the laptop.

POP3 however does not synchronise the other folders of the account which means for instance if you send an email in Outlook it will not show on the BT servers and vice versa.

As has been suggested, best to set up the email account as an IMAP account.

You can reset your BTMail password yourself. If you go to the log on page for BTMail using a web browser by clicking on this link BTMail.

Below  "Next"  there is a link "Forgot login details". If you click on that and follow the prompts you can change your BTMail account password.

If by "Network Password" you mean the wifi password so that you can connect to the Internet you will find the password on the label on on your BT hub.

I'm assuming the OP had already tried that and/or forgotten the password to log into BT, so a phone call seemed safer.

Good point about POP.  I stand corrected.  Been the best part of 20 years since I've last used POP3 and I'd forgotten about the tick box option.

I did read recently in the industry press, however, that support for POP is starting be withdrawn by many mail providers, so a change to IMAP would be due.

Thanks for all the assistance.  I'm pleased to say I've been able to access my account and receive emails.  I'll look into updating to IMAP as you have both suggested.

Best wishes

Bear in mind you can't just change the account in Outlook2007 on the fly. The account has to be deleted as POP3 and re-created as IMAP.

Yes, that's why I've not done it before now, as there are still a lot of emails I have saved in folders that I want access to, which I'm not sure I will be able to access if I change to IMAP.  But I will look into it again at some point.
