Spam from rottentomatoes.com

Like many others I have suddenly started getting numerous spam emails on my BT account apparently from rottentomatoes.com  Is this a problem with BT email addresses somehow being made available?  Not a problem with the spam they are all picked up and go to spam folder but a nuisance because occasionally a real email goes there as well and easy to miss amongst the 20+ a day from rottentomatoes.com

Re: Spam from rottentomatoes.com

Do you not use your BT email address anywhere else than when you contact BT?

If you do your email address could have been harvested from any one or more of the places that you have used or supplied with your email address so I fail to see why you suspect BT email addreses are somehow being supplied from I presume BT.

If the emails are going into spam at least it shows the spam filters are doing their job.

Re: Spam from rottentomatoes.com

.... because it has not happened with other email addresses I use, and I know of a number of others with BT addresses who have had exactly the same problem and only with their BT addresses.  Can also see similar comments elsewhere online.

Re: Spam from rottentomatoes.com

I have no doubt that non BT email addresses also receive rottentomatoes spam and that email addresses are harvested from numerous sources however if you feel that your BT email address has been "made available" by BT I suggest that you contact the CEO of BT, you'll find her email address with a simple Internet search, and report your findings to her and request that the matter be investigated.

I would also suggest that you and the number of others that you have mentioned check their email addresses using the following link to see if the email addresses have been subject known data breaches.

Re: Spam from rottentomatoes.com

Thanks again.  I was not suggesting that BT had made addresses available, but was just wondering if there had been any data breaches or if others had had the same problems.  I have checked and the only breaches that appear to have involved my address were a number of years ago so unlikely to be the cause of the latest spam.

Interestingly, having been receiving about 20 messages a day, I have received none since my post!  Coincidence!

Re: Spam from rottentomatoes.com

Spam comes in cycles. The spammers find a new way around the spam filters and the email suppliers play catch up until their spam filters counter the spam and then a new cycle starts.

Spammers move on if they are not getting any responses from their spam that has been sent out.  If spam email is opened it can trigger a response back to the spammer so they know they have an active email address.

Scammers will be able to tell that you opened an email if you download any attachments or click on any links (which you should never do), or if your email account automatically loads any images that are embedded in the message.

Scammers can gain a lot of data about you if you have automatic image loading turned on.

If you have automatic image loading enabled, scammers may be able to see:

  • Your location.
  • Your internet service provider or mobile carrier.
  • Device you used to open the email (desktop, tablet, iPhone / Android).
  • Operating system you’re using.
  • Email client you’re using.
  • Web browser you’re using

To counter that you should turn off automatic image loading. You can do that by going into your BTMail settings.

If you get spam, do not open it, mark as spam and delete.
