Why has Outlook stopped working

I have been using Outlook for my emails for many years now. A couple of days ago it stopped reading emails. I phoned BT and got a helpful chap who told me I needed to use my BT ID password in the server definitions. I did this for reading and it woked fine. I also access my emails on my Android phone and tablet, using K-9 Mail, shortly to become Thunderbird. This was also successful for the reading.

I tried to do it for sending emails and it got rejected by Outlook. Similarly sending from K-9 Mail did not work.

I found the recommendation for server settings on the BT web site, but they didn't match any of the setup screens.

Does nayonw know what changed?

I phoned up the BT help line, and got a most unhelpful bloke. All he kept saying was BT doesn't support Outlook. I told him over and over again that something had changed but he said it was nothing to do with them.

Re: Why has Outlook stopped working

Nothing has changed, Outlook 2010 works just fine for me.

The correct settings are here

I've no idea why you were told to use your BTID password, it is your Email password that is needed.

I assume you are a BT broadband customer, if not and not paying for Premium Mail your account will have been downgraded to Basic Mail which is accessible via mail clients.

Re: Why has Outlook stopped working

Yes, I am a BT broadband user

I am confused by passwords, so I use the same one for all BT purposes.

I have already seen the recommended server settings, but they don't agree with the options on Outlook's settings screen.  I obviously managed to change the input settings, but it won't let me do so now. Any attempt to change the output server settings gets rejected.

I don't know what version of Outlook I  am on. I can't find any way to make it tell me.

Re: Why has Outlook stopped working

The correct setting are as per this link.

BT Email server settings | BT Help

You should be able to go into the Outlook settings to check that they are the same as those in the link and if they are not you should be able to change them.

When BT say they do not support Outlook what it means is that the BT staff can not give any help on them because they are not trained to do that with email client/apps.  There are too many different email clients/apps on the market to know about them all and also BT have no control of how the operate in the way they do with BTMail webmail.

BT do however do supply the servers and settings to allow them to be used with the BTMail system.

Re: Why has Outlook stopped working

A couple of days ago I tried for the umpteenth time to change the setting for the Outlook output server to what I thouight they should be, and it worked. Every previous time it had given an error message like 'oops, that didn't work' or similar. It also worked for K-9 ail on my android phone for the forst time. I still can't get K-9 mail on my android tablet to work, but I can manage without that.

I did nothing different. It just started working. BTi am on can deny till they are blue in the face that they have changed nothing, but they are lyingoutlook .c.

As I said, I do not know what version of Outlook I am on, I can't find a way to make it tell me. I did subcribe to Office 365 for a new laptop, but I don't know if that has installed itself on my

Re: Why has Outlook stopped working

I can assure you the server details for BT email have not changed in decades. If they had, every customer with a mail client would have problems.

Re: Why has Outlook stopped working

So three email programs on three different devices stopped working at the same time. I phoned up BT and they advised me how to change the Outlook password for reading emails  server and it then worked. This proves that BT changed something.

No they didn't change anything, there was probably a fault that has now been fixed. Totally different thing.

Re: Why has Outlook stopped working

Changing your BTMail password on Outlook would only work if you changed you BTMail password via your BTMail account first. If you just changed the Outlook password on its own it would not work.

As regards the BT server settings, as has been pointed out they have not been changed. If they had all the millions of people that uses BTMail on an email app or email client would not be able to access their email.

As you are the only person out of the millions of BTMail users that has this problems I suspect that there is user error in something you have done.

I would suggest that you either uninstall and reinstall Outlook and any other app after having backed them up and use the correct settings as per the links that have already been posted on this thread and not use the settings you " thought they should be."

You should also check that you can log onto BTMail using a web browser and if you can you should use that password when setting up Outlook and any other email apps/clients that you have.
