Presumably because you have barred short code chargeable texts.

Re: Digital voice adaptor

Much of what you ask about is answered here:

Digital Voice | Digital Home Phone | BT

With regard to call quality I feel that it is far superior to what we experienced on the old analogue network.

Customers have always been responsible for their own internal wired network/extensions.  By using additional BT DV handsets, wired extensions become redundant (although there are ways round this which are detailed elsewhere on the forum).  If you still want to use an older analogue phone somewhere else in the home just call Customer Services and ask for a free DV Adaptor to be sent out.

Nope, I haven't got them barred on my mobile; and my service provider's info says they don't bar them. So maybe BT has switched it off?

Yes, but it was a complex situation, and the poster in that thread was on full fibre so the solution for them (involving disconnecting the copper) wouldn't apply to me.

Re: Digital voice adaptor

OK, thanks.  You say additional DV handsets can be used - I presume they have to be bought?

On the DV Adaptor - that's what drove me to the forum in the first place - there seems to be no way to request one!

I shall write a letter.

Yes, the DV handsets are available from BT/EE at a discounted price.  The DV Adaptor - I requested one when I spoke to a Customer Services Guide last week and it arrived today (Monday).
