I'm intrigued to understand why you think disconnecting/turning off BT's DV voicemail service would somehow stop your Panasonic recorder (which I assume you mean a Panasonic answerphone) working.

I want to use my Panasonic recorder as it's easier to see if I have a message

As DV doesn't work in a power cut, it might be worth using both.  I set my Panasonic to answer after 5 rings and the 1571 to answer after 10 rings.  That way, the Panasonic answers first but if the call can't reach the Panasonic someone can still leave a message on 1571.
