Re: Calling packages

700 mins replaced 500 mins a few years ago , when PSTN was still able to be ordered , it seems that this plan (700 mins) is now only available to existing phone only customers, BT broadband customers who want telephony have to take PAYG or Unlimited Minutes.

As standalone telephony is currently pretty difficult to actually buy , with the PSTN switch off , the requirement is to take DV , the only exception being existing BT telephony only customers moving to PDPL (pre digital phone line )  so effectively the 700 mins is unavailable to anyone but them.

The only example I’ve seen recently of a new BT customer wanting telephony only was given BT broadband for free, just  to run the telephone service (proper DV not PDPL) but with a warning that using BT broadband for anything other than DV ,(so basically any device connected via WiFi or Ethernet ) will be detected and taken to be a tacit agreement to accept broadband as an additional service and BT would (understandably) start to charge for it ,  BT can tell if there is any regular broadband traffic on that service, chances are a warning will be sent first , something along the lines of ‘we noticed you are using broadband , if you continue to do this your bill will increase accordingly ‘ but these type of customers will be pretty few and far between.

Re: Calling packages

If that is indeed the case, the website does not make it clear at all.

Re: Calling packages

Unfortunately the BT site is so unwieldy and presumably not checked for contradiction and old info , there are numerous places that contain out of date information.

Re: Calling packages

All very confusing and misleading. How anyone is supposed to work out their options independently with any degree of confidence I don't know.

Thanks to all who replied.

Re: Calling packages

Hey there, @homerhotspur

Thanks for flagging this, I've double checked and these plans are mentioned in the 'important info' and 'legal information' section just for reference for any customers that may be on these legacy plans.

It's only the options listed at the top available for current sale.

I've fed this back though, as we definitely want to be sure the options available to customers are clear.

Re: Calling packages

The Tariff Guide only says that 500 Minutes is a "calling plan we no longer sell" and suggests that 700 Minutes is still available (appearing alongside 'Pay As You Go' and 'Unlimited Minutes' under "UK Calling Plans & Popular Call Prices – Home Phone"). I suspect that 700 Minutes, despite no longer being promoted, is still potentially available if you phone BT and ask nicely for it.

I've no idea why BT would think that customers want 'all or nothing'. Both 'Pay As You Go' and 'Unlimited Minutes' are extremely expensive, especially compared to what you get from a mobile phone contract or 'bundle'. Surely most customers would want something 'in-between'? Bundles are the norm with mobile phone providers, usually offering several 'inclusive minutes' options. For BT to remove such options would be a real backward step.

As an aside, BT's consistent inability to quote the same price for PAYG and Unlimited between the Tariff Guide and their website is baffling!

Website:
PAYG - £31.20 per month (including line rental - so basically, line rental only)
Unlimited - £49.20 per month (including line rental - so £18 for the plan)

Tariff Guide:
PAYG - £31.20 for line rental + £7.16 for the plan = £38.36 per month
Unlimited - £31.20 for line rental + £22.47 for the plan = £53.67 per month

I'd have thought that new 'phone only' customers would be directed to Home Phone Saver, currently £23.86 a month (although the Tariff Guide still states £22.86, not taking into account the recent increase). The alternative would be a calling plan with 'Line Only Discount' applied (currently -£18.11). 700 Minutes with 'Line Only Discount' (the £18.11 discount being for those without broadband from any provider) works out at around the same price as Home Phone Saver: £31.20 + £10.73 - £18.11 = £23.82/month.
