I had a look this morning and it was still a bit confusing. I looked at the end that goes into the phone and it had a black cable to pin 2, a red one to 3 and a yellow one to 5. Is that straight rather than crossover or have I a really odd old cable? Sorry if the photo ends up too large.
Out of interest I looked at the other phone I tried to plug in, but it was impossible to see which pins were connected, although it looked like the middle 4 of the BT end were all copper instead of just 2.
The cable you need is a straight BT431 - RJ12 (not RJ11) as far as I'm aware.
Thanks, I'll order one and fingers crossed it works this time. 👍
You don't need RJ12 as only pins 2 & 5 or 3 & 4 are used on the RJ11. You need to ascertain what you have, using the link I provided or order one of each straight & crossover. Ordering blind has only a 50:50 chance of getting the right one.
I'm even more confused. One of you is telling me one thing another something else. I've posted and described the end of the old cable I have for the phone. What is it? What do I need, please? I've seen from that linked post that the BT end seems to make no difference, and it's the RJ end that does. So what the heck am I doing here?
My bad, I meant RJ10 rather than RJ12, but straight BT431- RJ11 should be ok as @Anonymous says.
You can't tell anything by looking at one end, You've identified the colours on the BT431A, so where do those colours connect in the RJ11
Thanks, but I'm having no luck finding one on Amazon. A lot of numbers but none that seem to match this one. I need a 3m or preferably 5m length cable too. I apologise for being so thick about this. I have MS and find it hard to take in new information or sort things out without idiot-proof instructions. Any links or hints as to where I can find this magical cable I need would be greatly appreciated.
From what I can see, the end that goes into the green socket on the router has the yellow cable to 2, red to 4 and black to 5. So what does that mean in combination with the other end I posted above?
Your pic has only just been approved, so we can now see that the RJ11 connections also go to 2 & 5. Therefore if that is a pic of the original cable you need "straight". If that is the replacement cable that doesn't work, the you probably need "crossover".
With all due respect to @licquorice, the variants of RJ are a bit of a red herring, as they're essentially the same connector with different numbers of physical pins. Just stick with RJ11.
Edit
It looks like the Currys cable with the adapter is "LOGIK LMEX518 Modem Extension Cable - 5 m".
Connect your telephone directly to a BT socket with the Logik LMEX518 Modem Extension Cable. Ideal for replacing or extending your current cable, you'll get a strong connection that you can rely on. With a crossover adaptor included, you'll have everything you need to start making calls straight away.
There's a 10m one at the same price. I'm afraid forum rules prevent a direct link.
