Care home room registration

Go to solution

I'm looking to transfer my mum's phone service to a care home. However, the room number is not showing up on listings and have been advised to register the room number with Royal mail before the service can be set up.

However, this seems to be taking a while now nearly 2 weeks and I've not heard anything. I will now have to cancel the phone service because the property will be vacant.

Anyone know how I can resolve this and get the transfer of service done any quicker? Or is it a matter of waiting until royal mail register the room number on to the listings? I got a feeling they are not in any hurry to do this and it's probably just a man and his dog dealing with these requests. There's no money in it for them so why should they be.

I am most frustrated by this and anxious for my mum because she may feel cut off from family not having access to her phone. It's not very reassuring for her as a new care home resident. And no, she can't use a mobile phone for the time being. The irony will be is that when it eventually gets sorted out, she may well forget how to use the phone anyway!

I look forward to comments.

Does the care home room have a phone socket already in it cabled back to the point where the Openreach cable enters , and do the care home allow residents to use it privately ?

BT generally are only obligated to provide service in regular dwellings , so registered with the council for council tax , its own front door/letter box etc , an entry on the Royal Mail database is almost shorthand to show a these other conditions are met .

People can and do get private phone and broadband service inside  individual rooms with in these type of facilities but often there are a couple if prerequisites (apart from the Royal Mail ) , that the  care home allows it ( after all the outside cabling to the home if it’s served underground , will go to a central point within the home , like the utility room so access is needed here )  , and from that point it’s usually required to have existing cabling to each individual room  , if care home don’t allow it , then clearly you can’t have a personal line , and if no internal phone /broadband cabling exists, then it may not be possible to retro cable through the common areas of the home to get to the individuals room

….however it’s not that uncommon and if others within the home have already done it , the chances are there will be the existing cabling to do this and the home manager will allow it , but until the address appears on the Royal Mail and then Openreach update their own records to match the updated RM database you can’t raise an order .

Thank you, its a great technical reply but probably too much information.

Yes, the room does have a phone point already installed. Some room numbers are already listed which suggests to me that services have previously been provided or are currently being provided direct to the individual rooms so the infrastructure is there.

Your last sentence answers my question I guess. There is nothing I can do and it is in the hands of Royal Mail until I receive notification of registration on database. BT will be losing a customer. No point paying for a phone service when it is not being used at its current location or able to be transferred.

Would a mobile phone work? It could well be a cheaper option if so.

How would she tell the difference.

Google desktop mobile phone or 4G desk phone for various devices from Amazon (it is against forum rules to post a link)

Hey, I didn't know those existed! Mum currently uses the bigtel 40 which we program direct dial buttons for her. Instead of the photos we use colours so she just presses a colour choice of 3 to get through to one of us. She got used to this now. It's also amplified.

I have seen a mobile version of this but looks pricey and perhaps a little on the small side. Buttons have to be big because of eyesight etc.

Teaching her to use another phone could be rather challenging now. Thanks for your reply though. I've learnt something 👍

Got my response from Royal Mail 2 weeks later. They said they need notification of the address from the local authority. So thats more delays. Anyway, thanks to the responses I have looked into the option of the SIM operated desktop phone and have my eye on a particular one which is similar to what mum is using now. I didn't think anyone could help but they have. Thank you licquorice for telling me about these 😊
