Complete new installation

Having a brand new phone line and broadband fitted sometime soon once dad has moved home. The new place has never had a phone line! Shockingly! My question is when the engineer arrives will he fit just a single socket and can this be placed wherever dad wants? It would be better if he could have a couple of sockets,  it I’m not sure if there is a charge for more sockets. Can anyone confirm this please?

Re: Complete new installation

Yes it will be a single socket , and within reason it can be where you want it , but it is very unusual to not have anything existing….there may be a socket somewhere you are unaware of , often if a property hasn’t had a working line for a while the order for service is called a ‘new line’ order , but it’s not really a brand new line that’s provided but making a dormant line ‘live’.

Re: Complete new installation

If you are moving and getting a new connection are you sure it is not fibre to your home (FTTP) and the phone digital voice which connects to back of the BT ROUTER and is VOIP

If FTTP then there are no phone sockets Ike previously and hub connects to an ONT (fibre modem)

Re: Complete new installation

@Wilbur-hay  It won't be a traditional analogue phone line whether copper or fibre. It will be a Digital Voice service.

I’m very un-techy could you please dumb that down for me. I have to relay this also to someone very much older than I am too (who is less techy than me if that’s possible!)

Re: Complete new installation

Have a read of https://community.bt.com/t5/Home-phone-including-Digital/Digital-Voice-FAQs/td-p/2207485

The phone service will be delivered by broadband. The phone is connected to the BT hub ( router) rather than a traditional phone socket.

If the broadband is delivered by copper, a normal socket will be fitted but only the hub connects to it, not the phone ( or cordless base station).

If the broadband is delivered by fibre, there won't be a normal socket at all. The fibre connects to fibre modem (ONT) which in turn connects to the hub.

Re: Complete new installation

Left SD some time ago so rules may have changed but when I was a OMI but CP’s would/could add Banding to an Installation from 0 to 6 hours on a Standard Installation.

So basically the Standard Installation allows an Installer 1hr as Standard once the cable hits the external part of the property. If any work takes longer than that hour they would start charging within the Banding. This also allowed us to do additional work at the Subs request, i.e. install an Extension Socket.

So let’s say I install your line and there’s 6hrs of Banding on the Job and you ask me to Install an Extension Socket on other side of the house. I do it and it takes say 2hrs. I would therefore raise a Charge for 2hrs of additional work.

I think in all the years I was a OMI I was only asked a few times to do work beyond the NTE.

It was never confirmed to us though if the additional charges were passed onto the Sub by the CP though as it was always hammered into us the CP was our Customer not the Sub, aka EU, aka You.
