Cost of calls to channel islands

Why do I get charged to ring landlines in Jersy when calls to uk landlines are free and I pay for international freedom.

Re: Cost of calls to channel islands

Because despite the fact the Channel Islands use the UK dialling plan:

  • Jersey is not in the UK.
  • Jersey has its own telecommunications operators; BT does not operate in the Channel Islands and has to pay those operators to take its originated calls. Calls to the Channel Islands have always costed more than calls within the UK because of this.
  • BT International Freedom does not include the Channel Islands.

@Colin_London

"has to pay those operators to take its originated calls"

Do telecoms operators across the world actually pay each other for connecting calls?

I always understood, (possibly incorrectly), that it was done on a reciprocal basis: ie when a call is made from a BT line in the UK to say Jersey or Italy etc, then BT keep all of the revenue, and similarly, when an international call is made in to the UK, the originating operator keeps all of that revenue?
