The confusion over digital voice and that this can be delivered via either a copper based broadband connection or via a fibre one, is partly because of BT's own digital voice publicity which talks about "retiring the old copper cables". This is of course wrong and, as others have said, it'll be a long time before the copper cables, at least as far as the street cabinets, disappear.
