FTTC and digital voice

Go to solution

Hello, so I’ve been given a date for my digital voice switch over next week. I have a few questions, concerns. When they switch off my phone line will my broadband still be ok? The only reason I ask is because in the past when my phone line has gone off ( no dial tone )for whatever reason I’m not sure, my broadband line stats got worse, like the SNR and then would start disconnecting. At the time I obviously reported the phone line fault and was told yes your broadband will suffer because your phone line is off. Engineer comes fixes my phone line, all nice clear ring tone and my broadband is good. When they switch off my land line will I have a problem with my broadband again because I am FTTC? I mean how will it work because we’ve all ways been told you need your phone line to have a internet connection? I haven’t got FTTP here yet.

also I’m just gonna throw my landline phone in the cupboard and not use it at all, can I get a lesser price because I don’t need the land line anyway…

any help is much appreciated

thank you

There is one pair of wires to your house, it delivers both broadband and telephony over the same pair of wires. Ergo, if there is a problem with the wires it will affect both telephony and broadband. This is no different with Digital Voice.

@Raj1015

The removal of the line voltage from the exchange, can have a detrimental effect on the performance of FTTC and ADSL, if there are issues with the quality of the local network.

High resistance faults and spurious induced voltages can affect the performance.

You do not need to have a phone service, and can have a new contract which is broadband only. This is not going to make any difference to the likelihood of a disconnection.

There is only a tiny cost saving.

Thanks for the reply,

lately my fttc has been good just the 14 day reset, which is fine. So if they switch off my phone line could this affect my broadband even though it’s been good, touch wood over the last year or so, that is my real concern?

No, it won't affect your broadband.

I am on FTTC with Digital Voice.

Thank you so much for that, so it won’t matter then if I don’t plug my phone into the SH2, my internet should be good?

Its entirely up to you if you plug your phone in or not, it won't make the slightest difference. It is just the same as connecting another laptop or any other device to your hub.
