How is your phone's base unit connect to the phone line?
Have you moved to digital voice recently?

Re: Handset
Can you confirm that you are a BT Retail customer?
Have you tried a different phone in the phone socket?

Re: Handset
Who are you with for phone/broadband? Have you recently moved to that provider?
Assuming you have also spoken to the provider to check if the phone works with their home phone service or if they have any service issues in your area.
What phone make and model do you have?

If they are a fibre only provider, they will not be providing a phone service on a phone socket.
They use VOIP (Voice Over IP) which they call YOUPHONE.
If you have asked for this service, then they would have provided you with an adapter which connects your broadband to your phone.
You need to visit their website for full details.
