Can I keep my BT Landline number if I switch my broadband supplier?

Re: Keeping my landline number

Normally yes but it would be down to your new provider to arrange, some providers are better than others but it's against the forum rules to discuss competitors, do some research before switching.

Alternatively speak with BT, see what deals they have to tempt you to stay, speak with the Loyalty team on 0800 800 150

Re: Keeping my landline number

I have tried 3 different broadband suppliers and they all say that I will have to change my landline number for their service. One said that BT had a 'cease order' on my landline and they could not provide me with a broadband connection and landline with my current number unless BT 'released it'. BT say they don't know what a 'cease order' is. It seems that I am trapped with whatever BT broadband they have if I want to keep my landline number - which I have had for 50 years.

Re: Keeping my landline number

If you are looking for a new provider and want to keep your existing (BT) phone number , it’s entirely down to your new provider to arrange, there is no barrier placed by BT to stop you doing this , if the other company  is implying BT are not allowing the transfer,  it’s quite simple , they are wrong ,however if have called BT yourself and cancelled your BT service , then tried to contact another provider, then you have messed up yourself by not leaving it to the company you want to join to serve your notice to BT , and it’s quite correct to state if you call BT to cancel your service , then contact another provider, they won’t be able to use the phone number that you asked BT to cease.

@raybridges

As @iniltous  has said, if you have already asked BT to cancel your service, then you have already lost your landline number.

Normally when you move providers, you ask your new provider to take over your service, and they tell BT. That is the only way you have a chance of keeping your number, but its never guaranteed.

If you must keep your number, and have already cancelled your BT service, the only hope would be to ask BT to re-instate your connection. You would get a new number to start with, but could then ask for a renumber back to your original number.

Re: Keeping my landline number

I have now discovered why i cannot transfer my phone number. Apparently the number i have had at my current address with BT for the last 20+ years is registered to a different address! My number has been registered by Openreach to a house about 6 doors down the road ever since it was installed. I now have to try to get Openreach to fix their records. I hope everyone reading this will wish me luck with trying to do that!!!

This is called an ORDI (Openreach Data Integrity) if it's correct, to have it checked and updated needs done by your current provider, if you're still with BT then you can speak with the connections team on 0800 800 150

Does the above apply if the line has been switched to Digital Voice?

Yes, the BB access will be the record your provider is using, either that or they made up the reason and can't work out how to port.
Either way an ORDI will check everything matches and correct any mistakes, they don't cost you anything, if it does turn out the records are right, your new provider is making excuses.
