Re: Landline with no broadband

Go to solution

This morning I plugged the new hub2 into the master socket in garage to see if it will turn to blue but no. I also picked up the analogue landline and that is still working.

I logged into MyBT again and it says my new digital voice service is active (and as yesterday it gives the current analogue landline number) and it also says my new broadband service (not that I ordered a new broadband service but I assume they lock me in for 2 years or something as part of the moving to DV) is operational (which presumably is just the new hub2 which is not yet installed by me on the top floor where the master socket for that number is).

So My BT indicates all has occurred but the fact my analogue landline is still operating as before makes me suspect what has happened is  that BT has somehow moved the broadband line to digital voice - something that does not need doing and wasted BT's money in sending out a hub2.  However I will keep waiting for a few more days and if nothing changes will install the new hub2 upstairs on the broadband line.

I agree with the posters above saying there must for older services be a telephone number linked to each broadband account. So my shorthand of calling it broadband only is misleading. The line was brought into my son's room 2 floors up in about 1999 or whenever better internet than the dial up the rest of us were happy with came out. He only ever had broadband on that line although it had to have a telephone number allocated to it. I do now remember a few times over the years trying the telephone socket on the same open reach branded master socket in that room and it never worked and I have always known the telephone number associated to it and has been on every bill but never had an enabled analogue telephone service on it.

So 2 days ago when MyBT online account said it had enabled DV on that number I was confused. Yesterday when BT changed that of its own volition to DV enabled on the downstairs normal landline number that confused me too. Had the new hub2 worked on the landline only line master socket in the garage that would have made sense.

Anyway I shall wait. I suspect the upshot is goingn to be that I put the new Hub2 on the broadband line upstairs and put no hub in the garage as the analogue landline despite what My BT says has not been enabled with DV.

I suppose come 2027 when they are cutting everyone off they will just cut it off entirely as their records will presumably as of yesterday show that number is now moved to DV (which currently it is not).

I think a note from BT or on its website about people who have these old legacy separate lines/numbers with only broadband and also a landline with no broadband on it ie 2 numbers on the bill as I have both with the word Landline against them but only one has telephony (analogue) and only one has broadband would be extremely helpful so people know into which master socket to plug the hub2 - something I still don't know.

Another point might be everything BT  is saying is right but that they have just forgotten to turn off the analogue on the home line and forgotten to enable broadband on the homeline  - in other words a very simple error nothing to do with an upstairs separate number (no telephony)  with BB already.

This is going to be my last contribution on this thread , absolutely everything that can be said  has been , all the necessary guidance has already been provided, but as the saying goes , you can lead a horse to water.
What I would say is you continually obfuscate, and as suggested already , quite possibly on purpose, all the information you need to know is already here , perhaps try reading it again .

Re: Landline with no broadband

I will keep updating until things are clear. Today on MyBT BT has switched things back to the "number" we don't have as telephony as the one on digital voice.  "Welcome to Digital Voice -
You’ve switched to Digital Voice for HD-quality calls and great features included for free."

If on MyBT I click on landline rather than on digital voice  it shows that main home landline number (master switch in the garage is still a landline)  "  Your landline Your number: 1234565 Unlimited Weekend Calls Perfect for keeping in touch with friends and family at the weekend Unlimited calls to UK landlines from midnight Friday to midnight Sunday, for up to an hour"

That makes sense to me and the landline is still working and 48 hours have passed so I will probably assume they switched the line without telephony on it which just has broadband on it to digital voice of the two "landline " numbers showing on the bill and that as I woudl have expected they will only move the only landline number to digital voice in 2027.  In the next few days I will put the new hub2 which rather pointless they sent for a non telephone line (but thanks very much BT) in place of the old hub up there as it is newer and will at that time see if suddenly there is a telephone service on that line/number which has never had that function on it to date. I am not sure I really want or need that additional landline number up there but I will certainly try it for my own curiosity. I don't thnink I will put the new moden up there tonight as am tired and it still might be an interim period of analogue downstairs temporarily working and there is no rush.

I know people are fed up but no one has to reply. I am finding it all quite interesting and am learning quite a lot about it all as I go about my slow and steady way and investigations.

Re: Landline with no broadband

I am sure everyone will be delighted that I have now come to the end in this phase of digital voice today. I have installed the hub2 upstairs and for the first time since we had the line put in it now takes telephone calls from a landline plugged in the back - thus the result of DV so far is that I now have three landline numbers that ring rather than 2. 2 are now on digital voice but the third landline only line (analogue with no broadband on that number) remains outside DV. This is also consistent with what the myBT account shows as of today.

What would have helped is had BT's original email said - we know you have  two lines on this account, one with phone only and the other with broaband. We will be migrating the broadband to DV.

That broadband line from about 1999 has never ever allowed telephone calls as we never enabled that service on it but as of today it now does through the hub2. I have alerted those who use that broadband to the new wifi codes and have put a spare landline in that hub2 2 flights up although I expect no one will ever use it.

So that is 2 lines  down (now on DV - another switched a month or two ago successfully) , one to go. Just the remaining analogue landline downstairs with its master socket near the ceiling in the garage remains analogu presumably until 2027 when those people just with analogue landline on a line and no broadband will switch.

(Meanwhile UK Power are STILL working outside with massive holes dug and down the road where the main fault that cut 1000 houses off briefly (us 90 minutes) ,  but the neighbour near me having to use their generator for a week at least is back with main power as far a I can see).

Many thanks to everyone for their help. I will probably be back in 2027 when BT moves the other telephone number which has no broadband on it on that account to digital voice.

The new hub2 has replaced a 2016 hub so even though it was a bit of a hassle at least we have a newer hub2 now on that line. Let us hope charges don't go up next month just because two landlines/home phone numbers now work where only one worked before on that account.....

Re: Landline with no broadband

Yes, all in vain, but BT should have made it clear they were not changing the landline for now and were putting digital voice on a broadband line which has never had calls enabled on it but now does.

By the way a few secopnds ago our broadband went down briefly (this happens a lot) and I picked up the landline which IS on digital voice and of course it could not make calls. With analogue for over 25 years I have never had a fault on the line. I have also had two long calls cutting out on that line in the last week and the other person had to dial back - now that might have been a fault on their end, but it could be that digital voice is not as reliable as analogue.

Anyway hopefully that is the end of all this until 2027 when the last analogue line will move to BB.

Both analogue phone and broadband are only as good as your line. If your line experiences problems it will affect both.

Obviously you will be more aware of broadband dropouts but not necessarily analogue phone problems.

Why dont you speak to BT and consolidate some of this down to a single account? You seem to have a very complicated setup, which has led to all this confusion.

Also your line wont move in 2027. It should move much earlier than that!

Re: Landline with no broadband

I am just very unkeen to call BT ever so will leave it for now and see where we are in 2027 and then do some rationalisation. if my adult sons moved out I woudl just need phone and broadband in my office although I have quited liked for all these years 2 separate broadband accounts at home in case one is down.

Today in the post BT sent a letter which of course does NOT say which of my 2 accounts it means but my stealth I can see as it mentions Fibre with Halo 1 that must be the line they just converted to DV (that did not need to be converted and which has esulted in my having three not two landline numbers - the most in my life ever).... Anyway interesting the marketing letter says I pai £91.46 as I know although I also pau £30,21 a month line rental but the letter chooses not to mention that for some reason. It also says in lighter type below that "Smart Hu £65" as if I am going to be charged on the next bill £65 for the Hub2 that just came which I did not need  but am using as old hub  was from 2016.

It will be interesting to see what charges are on the next month's bill for that account which now has 2 telephone numbers on it and one broadband line on one of those numbers.

On the back are some upgrade options but they are impossible to compare as there is no mention at all of the £30.21 a month line rental so although teh broadband part if i were to take Fibure Halo 3 at 73 raising to £81 might appear cheaper than £91 but I would be locked in, but who knows what is added for the 2 landlines - next month's bill might reveal all.

There is no such thing as 'Line Rental ', hasn't been for a number of years.
